Current Employee - Executive - IT in Calcutta (India)

I have been working at CESC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Still very stable job, Initial package is significantly higher than most IT companies. Works at very basic level, lot can be learnt about DBMS, Application servers and Web Technologies. Most of the co-workers are helpful and affectionate. Locations are very good for IT. Generally no shift, all NI Act holidays are available.

    Cons

Tools and frameworks are not used enough, this can make some works tedious at times. Top management is not much familiar with latest trends in technology, so not always ready accept new technologies. Part of users are very little accustomed to computers, this may cause serious trouble at times while designing. Changes keep coming regularly in requirement of deployed projects, So it gradually becomes difficult to maintain. IT has a very limited scope of growth, also increment in pay is not much. So despite being on high side on early days, package becomes average after few years. Job priority is not always clear.

I worked at CESC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. You will never be sacked unless and until you are a sexual predator. 2. Hardly any work.. All show of work.. You will get your salary in time.

    Cons

    1. No personal life. Boss will call you at all kind of ungodly hours.. Ruin your family life. They will say big big words above how CESC is like your family and will help you in your difficult times. But when it really comes to that you will not find it . 2. No scope for promotion, unless you can oil your bosses and their bosses all the time. 3. No scope of on the job learning. 4. Always have to be a "yes man".. Dirty politics 5. Thieving and corruption in section of employees. Demanding cut-money from contractors. This is prevelant in construction department and mains project. Indulging with them in doing jobs for money out side CESC by taking leave of absence.. This is particularly prevalent in Testing department. 6. Militant trade unionism in Mains department.. Distribution section.. Regional offices.. You will be astonished to find out that officers are given promotion on the basis of their being in the good books of political union leaders and NOT their performance. 7. Poor moral ethics among the woman workforce.. Lot of the go down to nasty levels to get promotions / incentives using very senior level executives who are equally debauch.

    Advice to Management

    1. Look at the young workforce.. Try to boost their morale.. Stop the practice of keeping on tons of retired employees as "CONSULTANTS" and revamp your promotion / incentive process. 2. People working in your organisation are HUMAN BEINGS.. They are NOT machines.. They have families and other commitment beyond CESC. Recognize that. 3. Stop debauchery, nepotism and corruption. 4. Top and middle management need not be all "Yes" men.. Have people fill up those places who have a voice of their own and are more imaginative. 5. Try to give at least your interested employees to pursue higher education / professional certification through a selection and merit process.

I worked at CESC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For typical middle class ambitionless, risk fearing, feet licking Bengali gentlemen..it's a wonderful place to work

    Cons

    1) Slow adaptation to change resulting into lagging miles behind the likes of TATA Power 2) Most of the DGMs and GMs are more of Professors rather than professionals. They have made it more of a school rather than office. That is a great factor which is lowering the dynamicity and vibrancy of the company 3) Those professional PROFESSORS invariably search for the youngsters whom they can make scapegoat during appraisal process. Rich gets richer and poor gets poorer until the boss finds a new ' chicken ' to slaughter. Boss, wake up and stop the nonsense 4) Special privilege of some of the older dy managers who are so called son like to the DGM. In terms of promoting or company paid foreign trips. The young guys have to hear that you are not even qualified for these...whereas youngsters expect some appreciations for their efforts to the team. If not promote them, atleast don't hurt their confidence.

    Advice to Management

If you want to grow again please get rid of these biased unprofessional bosses otherwise youngsters will not be available to work in such a dull atmosphere. And one piece of advise to the PROFESSOR...stop dreaming that you are next to Vidyasagar or Issac Newton.

People working here have no need for money; self respect; no dream of great things; entrapped in never ending delusion

    Pros

Sense of deluded greatness; deluded sense of self grandeur and that of CESC; a delusion that makes you think that you are living the way of a king where actually you are wasting your life.

    Cons

Cesc is a good company for those people who are born with a golden spoon in mouth; who will forever live in vacuum; does not know how the world rotates or how dreams take flight; all they do is oil and lick their bosses; deluded sense of greatness and the end of their bitter life blame that on their family.....it is not a company for dreamers; who has no end to their own ability; who stands on the top of a pyramid like a king with only the defeated beneath their feet as their blood is his glory.

    Advice to Management

Come back to earth in the next life and calculate your stupidity.....because this life you have wasted in your sleep dreaming for nothing except deluded sense of self grandeur

    Pros

    Cons

there are employee, who dont work, read newspapers whole day, and go home at 5pm sharp, and they get bonus at the end of year, and there are employees who work whole day gohome at 8pm but dont get bonus or increment, the reason is the second emplyee dosenot oils his boss, does chamcha giri to his boss. typical bengali type company, only few ppls work here, rest all take salary and goes home, very tuff to survive here. if you hvae any other better opputrunity in hand dont join cesc, you will loose your self esteem, self confidence.

    Advice to Management

stop sleeping, and check what is going on in your company, rampany corruption, and internal office polytics
