I have been working at CFA Institute full-time

    Pros

The best thing about CFA Institute is that no one is cynical or confused about the mission of positively impacting the investment management and capital markets industries by educating professionals on ethics and state of the art analytical approaches to understanding investments. The mission is bigger than the CFA credential program and everyone feels a part of it.

    Cons

The organization still needs to professionalize in some processes since it has grown up over time from a small professional association and is now a global enterprise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce approval layers and let the staff make decisions more quickly.

    Pros

Outstanding benefits, good working environment, friendly colleagues. Opportunity to travel and spend time in other offices. Good cultural values.

    I worked at CFA Institute

    Pros

Interesting work. Everyone who works here is always so nice, smart, and helpful. Benefits and comp are good too. Management is pretty committed to company values which is also a plus.

    Cons

Projects can sometimes be held up by a lot of bureaucracy. Not the fastest-moving or most forward-thinking firm either.

I have been working at CFA Institute (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Enjoyed the work, and always worked with nice, reasonable, smart people. Benefits were great, and pay was generous. Espoused cultural values were wonderful.

    Cons

High tolerance of mediocrity in both personnel and process. Emphasis on indulging wasted resources and talent. No appreciation of skills or experience brought to the job; job success relied completely on fitting in to a tight group - nice but also cliquey. Espoused cultural values were always trumped by strict hierarchy, limiting contributions and improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open to suggestion and improvement.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I feel honored to work at CFA Institute with its noble goal of improving ethics and education in the global investment industry. New HQ in Charlottesville is great, smart people, good wages and often times the ability to travel internationally.

    Cons

No firm is perfect. With many departments, coordinating efforts is sometimes challenging but this is improving. Many programs going on at the same time so sometimes priorities are unclear. This too is improving.

    I worked at CFA Institute

    Pros

Great benefits. Friendly atmosphere. No competitors in its market space.

    Cons

Struggles to be progressive due to risk aversion. Salaries are not competitive. Difficult for staff to find promotion opportunities.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits package. The salary works well for the market. Fairly relaxed environment. Most of staff become good friends. Not very much turnover.

    Cons

Very limited upward mobility, but all the lateral movement you could ask for. Very smart staff that seem underemployed for their capabilities. Unless you have a CFA designation, don't expect to climb the ranks.

There are a lot of HR issues and other problems that occur. Sadly, one of the only places to work in Charlottesville.

    Pros

It is one of the only places to work in Charlottesville, VA

    Cons

It is run by people with no education, Wall St. types and ex-professors. Does not mix well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest that HR be run by people that are employees, not consultants. I also suggest that there be a fair look at all employees, even those who have been there a long time. It makes it difficult to have a career path if there is never any where to go.
