As a junior environmental scientist, I had an overall positive experience.

    Pros

    - Employee involvement in managerial decisions/processes
    - Opportunities for project work across the world
    - Inclusive work culture (open to different personalities, different viewpoints, etc.)
    - Advanced use of/acceptance of new technology
    - Intelligent and hardworking co-workers
    - Many co-workers really care about getting involved in the local community

    Cons

    - Potential for 40+ hour work weeks (sometimes unpaid)
    - No bonuses or raises in my 2+ years as an employee
    - Promotions are slow and promotion evaluation is unsatisfying
    - Private consulting in and of itself is a con if you are not familiar with this type of work

    Advice to Management

Communications should be employee-first focused (as opposed to focusing primarily on business matters and clients), effective, transparent, and in alignment with the values that makes CH2M HILL a special company to work for.

    Pros

    - Flexible schedule.
    - Work/life balance is Terrific because most of the time you cannot find works to fill out your 40-hour timesheet weekly.
    - Learn how to be a negative person for a lifetime.

    Cons

    - If you consider this company to be your employer, God bless you!!! You will end up hating yourself and everyone around you.
    - An extremely toxic and negative working environment where most of senior engineers are not willing to help you gain knowledge or move further in your professional career path. I sometimes thought that it was in the best interest not to help you to eliminate future job competition because sooner or later they all would leave CH2M Hill. When asking a question, most of the time you would receive an answer "Hmm...I am not really sure. You can search it online...". Okay...If I could search for answer to my question online, I wouldn't be here asking you for help, would I???
    - Gossips and many gossips. I found it amusing that many people that I worked with seemed to be so nice to each other but once not together, they would start bashing each other.
    - Not many good projects for you to work on to gain hands-on experiences. You would expect a company of this magnitude to win big projects but definitely not in this office. I can see this trend will continue for many years. Many people were forced to take their PTO due to consistent lack of works.
    - A few people without an engineering degree let alone a PE would proudly call themselves engineers and refuse to listen to other supposedly good engineers for directions.

    Advice to Management

    - Get rid of all incompetent people and start hiring talented people. This is the only solution to win works.
    - Be more connected to your subordinates.
    - Provide young engineers with meaning tasks so that they can grow in their professional career. Giving them CAD works to do everyday is absolutely not beneficial!!!

    Pros

CH wins interesting and important infrastructure projects that provide an opportunity to quickly learn the industry. They offer flexibility to work from home and have a great group of people to work with. Very talented staff at regional leadership and mid-levels of company.

    Cons

Promotions and raises are almost entirely experience-based. Young, ambitious staff will ultimately be frustrated, regardless of what you achieve.

    Advice to Management

    1) The boom or bust strategy is clearly unsustainable - mega projects are profitable but the lack of a significantly diversified portfolio has led to major layoffs and overhead cutbacks (largely a result of previous CEO to be fair)
    2) If you want to attract top talent you have to reward top talent
    3) A little overhead spending goes a long way towards employee satisfaction

    Pros

    Benefits and perks are OK.

    Cons

Too many useless and incompetent "CH2M HILL Managers" in Virginia, that's why they're not able to win even small projects in the area. Transparency is another issue even though CHILL is classified as one of the most ethical companies... Fake.

    Is this really CH2M HILL?

    Advice to Management

    1) Eliminate the numerous layers of managers and put them to do real work
    2) Let go the managers who tarnished the company reputation instead of rewarding them
    3) Focus on long term instead of short term returns
    4) Enforce transparency and discipline the corrupt managers
