    Pros

They were very flexible with my schedule as a student. Despite the fact that I was an intern, I was given a high-level assignment and was able to operate independently. The management staff was extremely helpful and open with the projects they were working and it provided me a great place to network and understand the field more.

    Cons

Budgets impacted a lot of departments and contracts often ended too soon.

    Pros

    The job is reasonably stable.

    Cons

If the government shuts down, you better have PTB (Vacation Bank) to weather the upsets.
If you haven't been there 20 years, you are outside of the fence and treated like a new hire...no outside experience considered for vacation accrual.
Since it is a government contract, you aren't paid for how well you do or what you do...you are paid what the contract says that your hiring title, experience, and degree says you are worth. There is no negotiating with exempts.

    Advice to Management

CHPRC, run Hanford like a business. there are such things as succession planning, management training, and similar corporate programs to build your employees up to be more than a government drone. focus on these things. Get the government to loosen up onbenefits for exempts. Your benefits don't match market for college educated staff, and they have steadily declined over the past 15 years, while giving your Union Workers consistant if not better benefits over that time. In 1995, you wanted employees to have 2 wks vacation, a week for sick leave, and holidays on top of that. People with a 20 min commute to their site got an extra day because of givens like Dentist visits. Since then, you have leaned out vacation to below industry standard. 4-10s means a commute and total day away from home of 12hrs 30 min, for 10 hr pay. Quality of life on those 4 days is hampered until the 3 day weekend, as life after work is difficult to maintain in the 3 waking hours you have to eat, groom, do chores, and wind down.

  6. Lots of work for those willing to work!

    Pros

Lots of clean-up work. Finally, this contract has all Hanford contractors working together as teams which allows the work to be completed easier.
Management is supportive of employees to be successful and encourages employees to widen their horizons.

    Cons

Funding reductions by Congress regarding Dept. of Energy budget effect the work scope that is done. Reduction in funding means reduction in jobs.

    Advice to Management

Improve communications, be positive, and acknowledge all your employees that work hard in the background to make the Management shine!

    Pros

If you like 60 minute commute each way, long hours with forced overtime, and being lied to and talked down to you should love this place.

    Cons

Greedy, selfish, arrogant, pushy, liars, dangerous, will stop at nothing to belittle their employees. They will want to cut your pay so they can put more money into their pockets. Their benefits are less than adequate yet they tout how wonderful they are. They give thousands in bonuses to upper management and want to cut workmanship and safety.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as you would want to be treated.

    Pros

Good salaries and respect from peers. Strong safety culture and every employee has the right to stop work if they feel unsafe. The work schedule is 80 hrs per 2 weeks, but you get every other Friday off!

    Cons

This branch of CH2M HILL has over 2000 employees and job responsibilities are constantly being shifted from one individual to the next, or are not shifted at all when an employee moves on. The org charts are also never correct and management makes no effort to ensure turn-over when employees change responsibilities. This means very little expertise and a huge loss of records.

    Advice to Management

Think of your business like a retail store; if you decide to move your purchasing clerk into asset security and never replace the purchaser, or don't provide the new purchaser with any inventory or purchasing history, you're going to run out of product or have the wrong inventory to sell and your profits will plummet. That's exactly what you're doing!!!

  11. Helpful (2)

Senior management did not handle Stimulus ramp up and ramp down effectively.

    Pros

Great people on the project level, motivated, focused emloyees.

    Cons

Senior management was captured by union demands and disregarded productivity and cost to placate them. Senior management did not support non-union professional staff.

    Advice to Management

Listen to professional staff even if they have conclusions different than yours, don't just fire them.
