    Pros

A very strong history of doing great work for their clients and building lasting relationships that provide employees with meaningful work. On the forefront of virtual teams allowing many employees to work from home while delivering complex projects. The leadership is fairly flat but can be complex given the matrix type organization that is has grown into. Provides a lot of opportunity for driven individuals who have technical know-how. Benefits and compensation are competitive, especially for strategic hires.

    Cons

Given the size of the firm, certain groups can make the employee feel lost in the numbers. Growth in high risk contracts has been a challenge. Experience can vary significantly depending on the office (which is true for a lot of large firms).

    Advice to Management

CH2M HILL has the staffing capability to mobilize experienced construction managers, inspectors, and resident engineers anywhere we have a client need. We work in communities small and large around the globe, providing any level of service the Owner needs—from staff augmentation to full construction management

    Pros

Being a small company I get to do a bit of everything. Working in so many diverse fields throughout any day makes what should be a long day go very quickly.

    Cons

The pace. The projects all had really tight deadlines. This put additional stress on everyone.

    Advice to Management

None. It is a really great place to work. I love it

    Pros

    - Employee involvement in managerial decisions/processes
    - Opportunities for project work across the world
    - Inclusive work culture (open to different personalities, different viewpoints, etc.)
    - Advanced use of/acceptance of new technology
    - Intelligent and hardworking co-workers
    - Many co-workers really care about getting involved in the local community

    Cons

    - Potential for 40+ hour work weeks (sometimes unpaid)
    - No bonuses or raises in my 2+ years as an employee
    - Promotions are slow and promotion evaluation is unsatisfying
    - Private consulting in and of itself is a con if you are not familiar with this type of work

    Advice to Management

Communications should be employee-first focused (as opposed to focusing primarily on business matters and clients), effective, transparent, and in alignment with the values that makes CH2M HILL a special company to work for.

    Pros

Good people who want to work on fun and motivating projects. Those who remain are committed and continue to do good work.

    Cons

Weakened benefits, poor sense of direction from HQ in Denver, lots of mixed messages and not enough attention paid to the satellite offices. Bad morale after massive layoff/early retirement program. Weak human resources department.

    Advice to Management

Pouring money into rebranding, a new logo, colors, etc. will not fix the many problems. Cheerleader-type senior management is alienating employees outside (and I assume inside) Denver. Results are what motivate, not lessening benefits, threatening to stop phone reimbursements, and putting money and resources into a ridiculous Facebook-like internal social platform. It's not time to reinvent the wheel. They talk about going back to the company's roots, yet haphazardly try to plow forward. The mixed messages aren't working. Huge disconnect.

The leaders talk great values, but the values do not trickle down to the employees, respect, collaboration, compassion

    Pros

Fellow employees working hard as a team to give clients the best products and service. It was a great firm when Ralph was the leader - some of us remember him and strive to keep his vision alive.

    Cons

Long hours, including nights and weekends when there is work, but full time employees sent home with out pay when workload is light (this is not explained at time of hire).

    Advice to Management

All of the talk about respect and other new values is just talk until you get the managers in the middle to participate and become a united team again. Maybe time to look closer at middle management? (i.e. Sales and proposal mangers holding on to work until Friday afternoon, handing if off expecting it Monday morning - employees going to HR for help no longer an employee after, now all are afraid to speak.) Full time, should mean full time, period - not the individual's job to find work - could use downtime for training, building sharepoints, libraries, etc. Morale is so low - 3000+ lay-offs due to mismanagement while spending millions on re-branding. Average raises for past several years for workers is 1% with no bonuses, incentives, promotions, or even training opportunities. Not even budget to keep equipment up to date. A new logo won't help - actual action on treating employees with your values is a start.

    Pros

Lots of passionate and extremely experienced employees who really care about the company. Seen as a leader in a number of different markets.

    Cons

Lots of politics, and more politics. People leaders aren't well trained to be people leaders, are usually promoted due to technical expertise but not ability to manage. Pay and benefits are not very competitive for the most part. Organization is too slow to change, lots of mixed messages in communication from upper management and actions being taken.

    Advice to Management

When you say you're being transparent - actually be transparent. We know you're just dodging questions and telling half-truths. Get younger employees more engaged. We've seen the same reasons for attrition over the past five years and yet little has been done to address this. The trends are still increasing.

    Pros

    -interesting work
    -variety of work
    -flexible schedule and teleworking opportunities
    -good amount of vacation time

    Cons

-difficult, negative people create a very low morale
-billable hours difficult to meet with a competition for all work
-fear of losing job and what will be their next move
-expectations to bill less hours than actually spent on a project with any other work being on your own personal time
-too many very short projects which means constant looking for work/worrying about finding hours
-expectations to be connected at all times and "on-call" 24/7 for non urgent work, or due to procrastinating by others
    -burn out very quickly
-poor health benefits and 401k match, unacceptable for such a large company
-poor quality control of deliverables, affected by budgets
-no ability to move within the company

    Advice to Management

Accept a balance of hard work with some down-time to retain good, happy employees
