I enjoyed working there. Wish the local opportunity had worked out.

I worked at CHS Inc full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company had a good benefit package. I was a local representative and was like a leased employee.

    Cons

A lot of corporate bull. Meetings all the time. Corporate changed its mind several times. There was a kind of good ole boy network.
That could be good or bad, depending on if you were in the network.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a life outside of CHS,Inc. Get exercise to enjoy all the money you will retire with.

Professional environment, high energy, ready for positive change, stuck in 1990s

I worked at CHS Inc as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

They are in the beginning stages of change across the company. The strategy makes sense and there appears to be movement. The company will be transformed, in the right direction, I think.

It's a professional environment. People are nice and seem happy for the most part.

    Cons

In the IT department, it appears that there is a lack of overall strategic direction/leadership. Each department seems to be working independently and there seems to be a lot of conflict between teams. IT lacks a common goal, clear priorities and vision. Very reactionary and makes decisions based on "squeaky wheel" and politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To IT Sr. leaders, clarify roles and responsibilities and communicate shared goals and expectations to help employees become empowered to make the right decisions at lower levels.

I worked at CHS Inc as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

FTEs are typically passionate about the company and say that the salary/benefits are what keep them there.

    Cons

The IT organization is extremely immature for a Fortune 100 company and relies heavily on Contractor’s for support. On boarding processes do not exist. There is a lot of dependency on tribal knowledge in IT and unfortunately a lot of that knowledge seems to walk out the door regularly with contractors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The relationship and expectations set between IT and the business units is the biggest single obstacle that I feel needs to be addressed as part of the sweeping changes being made throughout IT organization or the coming months.

I worked at CHS Inc full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Financially stable in this economy - growing rapidly.

Your co-workers = all good people.

A HUGE Fortune 100 company, yet small enough at the headquarters in Inver Grove Heights that you start to know some familiar faces around.

    Cons

No "real" work/life balance - working 40 hours a week, standard 8-4:30 is not what I call work/life balance. Management needs to realize that the up and coming generation is used to working from home, flexible schedules etc- this is NOT the case here. You get 3 weeks of PTO to start off with - AND that includes sick time! and trying to work from home when your sick... NOT going to happen! It is not allowed.

Everything is still so stuck back in the 70's here... it's the old boy's club, the accounting and IT systems are ancient, and it takes YEARS for a small change to occur. "This is the way it's always been done, so why change it?"- should be this company's motto.

IT is WAY overloaded there - you ask for a program to be installed, it will take them 3 weeks to get to it. I don't know if it's laziness or the fact that they have way too much responsbility?

Rising up the company ranks?? Don't even think about it for at least 10-15 years... there is no place to go as all the management is currently in their prime ages and won't be going anywhere anytime soon. The company is very bare bones on people in every department- which is good because that is why they are so financially stable - but there is NOT a lot of opportunity for growth of your career here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace some change, listen to people's ideas and actually implement them - or else you are going to lose your talented, up and coming younger generation of people and there will be no one to backfill the positions when people start retiring.

I have been working at CHS Inc

    Pros

Good benefits, pension, 401k match, good work/life balance, accommodating to balancing act of employees with small children

    Cons

Politically and ethnically homogoneous, flex time and work from home options are very rare, and only after you show you have special circumstances or significant time-in as an employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer flex time and telecommmuting options
