I have been working at CI Investments

    Pros

Excellent culture in the private client department. Work hard - play hard environment and everyone is welcoming and easy to get along with. Very successful program, constantly providing a steady flow of work and clear sign that the company is in good health. Overall one of the best departments at CI in terms of culture and experience and definitely the most fun. Good amount of opportunity for movement within the department as well. Excellent environment to learn.

    Cons

Not many cons to this position. Overall a great department and a great entry point for a career in financial services.

I worked at CI Investments as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Work colleagues were friendly and open in all departments and I felt welcome to ask any questions if I had any. The culture had it's fair mix of "young" and "old" folk so it is easy to find people to relate to. There are several internal job postings.

    Cons

Perhaps more one-on-one meetings from your manager and goal setting could be beneficial. However, overall CI provided an overall good environment for my short time here.

Can' think of anything specific but perhaps giving more challenging/increasing responsibility would definitely be useful for co-op students

A good starting off point for recent grads, but the compensation is average

    Pros

For people fresh out of school it really doesn't get much better. The starter salary is good for fresh grads, 3 weeks vacation, great group of people to work with, and they actually want you to succeed, so you'll go far if you want to play the game and if you look the part. There is a strong focus on development and training. You'll meet some great people here for networking connections and also great friends, it's the kind of place that values camaraderie.

    Cons

They haven't adapted to the times. There's still a culture of the old boys' club at corporate HQ and there are no polices for mobility, flextime, etc. It's the old school 9-5 corporate office sit-at-a-desk-all-day atmosphere, not an innovative and creative place buzzing with new ideas. Technology is 10 years behind the times: everyone's computer is slow, the phones break down often, internet applications running at molasses pace often break down, and they're running Office 2003 - it's a joke. Compensation is good for new hires, but if you want to make money, don't stay for more than a few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Upgrade technology; CI uses technology for day2day business that I used when I was first learning how to use a computer
    2. Cut the dead weight; there are many directors and managers that don't add value to the organization and the young and innovative ones are leaving- it sets a bad example for the rest of us

I worked at CI Investments full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Promote from within, company is focused on growth, willing to invest in people/technology, strong brand behind the company, senior management always looking for opportunities to compete with/against the banks

    Cons

Company is run fairly lean with a flat hierarchy which can lead to fewer opportunities for advancement
