I worked at CIA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The organization attracts smart people and offers good training in leadership and management. There is an overarching focus on mission that can be inspiring (or homogenous). Views employees as there for the long term so willing to invest in growth opportunities.

    Cons

Overly bureaucratic so there are way too many layers between you and the product that goes to the policy maker. Difficult to get a breadth of knowledge since forced to specialize in narrow areas of expertise. As an analyst, you will spend most of your day working in isolation reading, writing, editing, re-editing, re-reading, re-writing products that quickly becomes more tedious than interesting. The security requirements are oppressive. It's impossible to provide the best analysis when you are not able to follow an unrestricted path of research and inquiry.

    Advice to Management

Move away from written products so that analysts can spend more time supporting the time-sensitive needs of policy makers.

    Pros

Travelling is the number one upside of this job.

    Cons

For self explanatory reasons this job isn't something you tell your wife, kids or friends too much about and therefore is more of a lonely job than you might think at first. Also the DC location kind of limits you to a certain degree.

    Advice to Management

    Decentralize more.

Good Pay and Benefits also if you like the type of work you'll enjoy going to work everyday.

    Cons

Bad Hours and Septa Union Regulations

    Advice to Management

Stop letting septa dictate and control who what when and where works for their sub contracts.

    Pros

Chance to do meaningful work. A wide variety of jobs. Good benefits. Travel opportunities. Opportunity to be involved with high impact projects.

    Cons

Living in the DC area can be tough (long commutes). The Agency is becoming more and more like the other bureaucratic agencies.

    Advice to Management

Stay focused on mission, and not on being popular with the public.

    Pros

I know everything, I get to travel the world, keep a weapon and spy. It's amazing . So many beautiful places on this earth and I've seen almost all of them

    Cons

I know everything, there's no turning back. I'm stuck doing this for the rest of my life. It's over.

    I worked at CIA

    Pros

The mission... counter terrorism and Special ops

    Cons

If you are not a case officier... no key assignments and promotions are rare. Politics and game playing. Depending on the office (clandestine services) - you need to be part a old boys club.... college degrees and certifications does nothing for your career except get you in the door. Appears that the dumber you are, the better the career options and movement.

    Pros

Great benefits and people who are interesting. Opportunities to travel and use your second language.

    Cons

Bureaucratic maze with a language of their own. They don't see innovation and out of the box thinking as necessarily a good thing.

    Advice to Management

Lighten up and smell the roses

    Pros

The Mission is outstanding. You make a real difference in the world. The pinnacle of analysis. Always new internal opportunities and something new to learn. Lots of training opportunities.

    Cons

Suffers from bureaucracy. Security protocols are opaque and cumbersome. Serious lack of racial diversity which can get very arduous if you are a minority.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be more diverse, the office of security needs to start being smarter. Reign in some of the egos in management who are more concerned with territoriality than the mission.
