Decent Summer Job

Casino Dealer (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at CNE Casino full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI'm speaking from the position of a dealer. Guaranteed hours as long as you're capable at your job, you can also pick up more shifts if you desire. Tips are pooled together and sent in September later, but they're nice. Depending on which game you deal there is varying degree of support within your own pit, but the support from the casino itself is not bad so there's no need to worry too much about customers that are too difficult to handle. There is also a food stand you can grab dinner at if that helps. Considering it's a position for a very short period there isn't too much by way of excellent perks or anything, but the pay is alright. The best perk is the guaranteed hours.

ConsIf you want really good hours, it's best to work the night shift which can be a pretty big downside for some people since the casino is open until 6am. Drunk angry customers who lose too much money are a pretty bad downside as well. Also slightly dirty considering the customer-base. The training and licensing needs to be paid for which is about $300 (??) at the very beginning, but the training is free after the first yer and you pay a substantially lowered fee to renew your license from the alcohol and gaming board. There's not terribly much chance of promotion? You can possibly work your way up to dualrate or pit boss, but that's about... it??

Fun Summer job, but short and not the greatest pay

Roulette Coupier (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at CNE Casino as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsGreat coworkers
You get paid breaks
Free Access to the CNE

ConsYou might not be well trained for the job (Depends on who your trainer is)
You might not get day shifts as nights are often more busy and most shifts are around that

Advice to Senior ManagementHire better trainers, listen to the actual staff when deciding who to make a trainer
Please hire enough staff

It's all right.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at CNE Casino

ProsDepending on your job, there could be different pros. Some dealers get paid more than others. Some positions include paid breaks. Security gets a $1 wage hike every year they return. Everyone but security gets a portion of the tips earned at the end of the year, based on the number of hours worked.

ConsHours can be quite bad, especially for the night shift, so don't expect much of a social life if you're working nights. Some areas are not air conditioned, which can be terrible for those who don't deal well in the heat.
