Overall it was not too bad, it provided a means to an end. Your chances for advancement were slim to none.

    IT (Current Employee) Carmel, IN

ProsThe pay is pretty competetive and they have decent benefits.

ConsYour chances for advancement or promotion or even a raise were very hard to come by, even when you went above and beyond your duties. You should always keep your resume up to date because you never know if you/your department will be in the next round of lay offs. This happens very often.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to come out of the "good old boys' way of thinking and be cognizant of the young talent withing their organization.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Carmel, IN

    Prospays well, learned a lot.

Consbad management decision causing unneeded over work from employees. make on-shore employees train off-shore employees with the goal of cut back on-shore team. everyone is seeing this coming.

Advice to Senior ManagementKey skill employees may opt to leave early before we get used then toss over board when the time come.

Trying to improve but still a long way to go

    Director (Current Employee) Carmel, IN

    ProsOpportuinies to excel
    Company future is looking up
    Good location

ConsNot a good work life balance.
Need to build a better corporate culture.
Don't always seem to appreciate the efforts and dedication of their employees.
HR is running roughshod over many other areas that are outside of their expertise. Senior leadership is letting it happen.
Depending on which area you are in, Finiance, Operations, IT, etc. you may have a different experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompany is well possitioned for the future, keep it up, but don't forget about the employees who helped get you there. Key employee turnover is possible and will really hurt.

Work hard and you'll get opportunities

Product Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Carmel, IN

ProsPlenty of opportunities for advancement and trying new or different roles if you work hard and show a sense of urgency.

ConsMany legacy systems and products that were bought over the years that were difficult to interface with each other. Many territorial people who had been there for many years and did not want to share resources or information.

    Get in, get out

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsLots of opportunities in the short term, for resume building.

ConsLonger term, a bad place to remain. Essentially, if you are skilled when you are hired here, there is a good chance you won't leave with more than what you put in. One the other hand, there is a large opportunity to take on more and more, so you will get good resume building.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the dead weight, and imagine the profits you could have.

    Enter at your own risk

Systems Analyst/Programmer (Current Employee) Carmel, IN

    Pros- Relatively flexible working schedule
    - Decent benefits, outside of health care
    - Competitive pay
    - Commitment to employee training/education

    Cons- Incredibly poor morale
    - Senior Management has taken an adversarial position with their employees
    - Very poor job security - constant layoffs
    - Very political - you won't advance if you aren't in good with someone
    - Lot of cheap, counter-productive offshore IT resources which shifts the workload onto the already taxed stateside associates
    - Far too many middle managers
    - Increasingly oppressive policies

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit sending jobs overseas...remember, you sell policies in the U.S., not India! Treat your employees like resources, not expenses on your balance sheet.

not a place to stay anyway

Actuarial Analyst (Former Employee) Carmel, IN

Proseasy to answer the question 'why do you want to leave Conseco' on your next job interview without being seen pretentious. People constantly leave (sometimes 1 person every month on average), so even if your real reason is you are not happy with the pay, or you can't stand your manager, you can always give a convincing and descent answer about 'job security'

Consjob security, you never know when the sh*t hits the fan, which could feel like any minute when you work there

Advice to Senior ManagementPut the company on the market and look for a reputable buyer: the 'Conseco' brand name ( or the new CNO) will probably not work, it would be better to sell product under 'Humana' or something ...

    Mass highering

Agent (Former Employee) Saint Louis, MO

ProsYou can potentially make a lot. Everyone that was there was pretty cool to work with, I mean you have to have a good personality in "sales".

Cons4 days a week/17 hour days---which I know, alot of ppl say they can do that, but it sucks. Expect to pay for food/hotels/and LOTS of gas! Sucks on weeks you only make $200. Farm towns are awful, don't let them tell you that all farmers have money and will be willing to buy from you, they won't. I've had so many doors slammed in my face.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop mass highering people, explain to your managers to explain to the new potential agents that COLD CALLING IS KEY! They say theyre all "preset appointments", BS! You walk door to door....it's awful. I paid for my Insurance License and don't even use it anymore cuz the insurance market where it's 100% commission is tough, don't take the weekly $500 withdrawal they offer when you first start...definitely avoid that!
