    I have been working at COLSA

    Pros

    -professioinal office space
    -every other friday offf
    -coworkers are nice
    -family-focused environment, lots of recreational events that can include kids

    Cons

    -difficult to let go of bad employees
    -not a lot of room for upward movement
    -low pay compared to peers

    make it easier to fire people who dont do their jobs well.

    small company that subs to others but when something happens to the prime the company can not adsorb you - so you are out looking for another job

    Pros

    Family Oriented - lots of events for family thru employee organization. Like renting out Point Mallard and BBQs.
    Benefits are decent - except for Health insurance, which you'll pay a decent amount for.

    Cons

    Low compensation compared to peers
    Low raises - Difficult to get significant pay increase.
    Only occasional bonuses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recognize and reward employees who are doing good work for your customers. Your managers will have to actually talk to your customers to find out how their employees are performing. I know that the Government contracting environment can create a disconnect between managers and employees, but, if you want to recognize your employees you'll have to check on them more than once a year.
    Compensate your employees fairly and don't wait until they are dissatisfied.

    Pros

    The benefits are comparable to other large companies. The 401K is equivalent to 4%. The last couple of years, COLSA has added an additional 2%.

    Cons

    For the last three years the raise pool has been 0, 2, and 2. This is the case even when the rates to the customer have increased 3% each year. COLSA does give out $1000 for the engineer of the year. However, it is very unlikely 99% of the engineers will receive a bonus. If you are not working at the headquarters, consider yourself just another number with low probability of advancement inside the company. If you need a job, go for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Have a luncheon and provide the meal to employees. Recognize special events in the lives of the employees -- such as birthdays, weddings, etc.

    Recognize and reward your employees for doing good work.

    Give bonuses to the direct-charge employees.

    Pros

    They tend to ignore you and leave you to your work, most of the time.

    Cons

    No support for employees working on customer sites. If you don't work in the company HQ, you don't exist. Asking for a raise will get you shoved out the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Your mid-level managers are some of the most talented players of office politics I have ever seen. The backstabbing, the throwing of underlings under the bus... it was a thing of beauty, really.

    Pros

    Paid overtime (comp time). 4% employer match in 401k, usually 4-5% additional discretionary contribution for a total of 8-9%.

    Work is usually pretty steady.

    Cons

    Alabama?

    Management learns basic skills on the job, predictable results. Not professionally trained/certified in management (some exceptions). Typical Huntsville AL company in that way.

    Projects vary, sometimes boring.
