Former Employee – worked at CONMED Corporation
Pros – It is a medical device manufacturer and the products that they make and distribute are intended and do help people. Generally nice employees who work hard to get what they perceive to be their job done. You are only expected to work 40 hour per week - engineers or managers are not expected to work overtime. Very effective sales force. Products generally well received in the marketplace.
Cons – Inept management. They continue to struggle to install and maintain an adequate quality management system (21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485:2003). The many "483" observations made by the FDA is and the too numerous product recalls are evidence of this. Not a great place to be an engineer or of a manager with any ambition - innovation with regards to both product and processes is discouraged. It also seems that you are always cleaning-up someone else's mess. Compared to other medical device manufacturer, like JnJ, working at ConMed is like going back in time; their business thinking and processes are at least 20 years out of date.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop tolerating ineffective managers.

Current Employee – been working at CONMED Corporation full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great people. Good benefits. If there was a greater focus in innovation, the company might actually experience some growth.
Cons – Cost driven bureaucracy. Upper management is ineffective and makes poor long term decisions. Does not value the employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Place a significant emphasis on innovation and provide your employees with long term support.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at CONMED Corporation
Pros – Linvatec does have a competitive portfolio of products, and most of my coworkers were friendly and interested in working together.
Cons – Linvatec is disorganized, there is ultimately very little meaningful direction or assistance from corporate and especially from management. One other sales rep described this thought as "feeling like half of our day is spent trying to cover up incompetence at the corporate level.
Advice to Senior Management – There needs to be more teamwork between sales reps, their managers, and upper level management. Linvatec would be as competitive as a company as it is with it's products if it harnessed it's collective skills and abilities.

Current Employee – been working at CONMED Corporation
Pros – 1. Foot in the door of medical device sales
2. Don't have to work all that hard
3. Attainable quotas
4. Like-able managers at Regional level
5. Products are priced competitively which helps overcome the lack of innovation
Cons – 1. Management at corporate level is horrible - VP holds the purse strings TOO tightly. Example - haven't had a regional OR national sales meeting since 2008 - prior to that it was 2006.
2. Communication between corporate and field is non-existent
3. Compensation structure based on GP and not a fair assessment of performance.
4. NO opportunity for advancement unless someone retires or dies.
5. Incompetent trainer and overall insubstantial training program
6. Products are "me-too" for the most part
7. Back orders and product failures abound.
Advice to Senior Management – 1. Restructure compensation to accurately reflect performance.
2. COMMUNICATE
3. Spend more time and money on R&D. Have something new and innovative for reps to sell
4. Force Frank to retire.

Current Employee – been working at CONMED Corporation
Pros – not much to say. can't do an effective job when restrictions are in place. no one listens to the employees
Cons – would not recommend this company for anyone to work at. all ownership cares about is the money in their pockets
Advice to Senior Management – sit down and work with the employees at all the divisions to see what they go through just to get the job done.

Current Employee – been working at CONMED Corporation
Pros – Acceptable work life balance.
Fairness of Management towards employees.
Products are well received by customers.
Very nice people to work with at corporate.
Cons – Poorly launched products, launching products and then trying to come up with a plan after the market has seen the product.
Back orders and chronic product failures that lead to customer complaints.
Advice to Senior Management – Move away from GP based compensation. Move to a flat percentage of sales for comp plan. Also, bump up the base salary. This is embarasingly low.
