Great position for students

Parking Officer (Former Employee)
Fullerton, CA

I worked at CSU Fullerton part-time for more than a year

ProsVery exciting. Every day will be different requiring sufficient problem solving skills. Great position to have during school as they make a point to work around your class schedule. Also very flexible in terms of asking for time off. Mostly a fun and stress free environment.

ConsThe office is older and can feel cramped at times. 10 hour work days can also be draining. Although, a normal part-time 20 hour week can be conveniently completed in two days.
Also, for all the lower positions, you must be a student to work there, resulting in a very high employee turnover rate.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is not really in sync. It takes a long time for things to get done.
Management also segregates themselves from the lower ranked workers resulting in communication issues.

My first research at CSUF was awesome!

HHMI Research Scholar (Former Employee)
Fullerton, CA

I worked at CSU Fullerton as an intern for less than a year

ProsCSUF has good PIs, professors, friendly and helpful lab teams. My CSUF research leader provided me all assistance and guidance I needed. She brought us to workshops, field trips, and outdoor activities.

ConsThe Pollak library closes earlier than other schools, which leads to some delay in accessing some research materials. Some areas do not have lights at night.

A Nightmarish Place to Teach

Adjunct Faculty (Former Employee)
Fullerton, CA

I worked at CSU Fullerton part-time for less than a year

ProsGood benefits and bureaucratic paperwork not excessive like at some schools. Relatively easy to navigate the campus/administration.

ConsStudents are unprepared for college work and are not respected or challenged by most professors. When a professor does come along that expects them to come to class prepared and write above a 9th grade level, they are shocked to hear that their skills are below average. The department chair of my department cared more about high enrollments and positive evals than about education. She suggested I teach a comic book version of Othello to students rather than the actual play because "they won't be able to understand" the original.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to put some exit exams in place so that faculty feels some investment in raising student reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

Front Desk Student Assistant

Front Desk Student Assistant (Current Employee)
Fullerton, CA

I have been working at CSU Fullerton part-time for more than a year

Pros>Job security until graduation.
>Opportunity to meet students, professors, and administrators from around the world.

Cons>Severely understaffed.
>Assistants will also work with sensitive administrative level information/projects that are not in the job description.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire a full time receptionist and use student assistants as assistants, hire more advisers/SEVIS staff, have more staff meetings that focus on group dynamics and resolving office conflict positively.

Teaching Assistant for intro biology classes

Graduate Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Fullerton, CA

I worked at CSU Fullerton part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat people. Getting to work with professors and students can really inspire you to do your best. It is also amazing getting to be part of research on a daily basis. The departments is adding more intro material for TAs. I think it will be extremely helpful for first timers, not so overwhelming.

ConsPay for a TA is not great. I think if you are a regular employee the pay is much more acceptable.
