Pros
strong product, good people. Fast paced environment with opportunities for advancement. Overall it is a great place to work. Good benefits, and 3 weeks vacation to start.
Cons
I feel that I don't make as much money as I would like to. Sometimes it's hard to organize specifics in a large corporation
Advice to Senior Management
I think that the management at CTV does a great job of managing employees and clients. Good job on being the best network in Canada
Pros
Met tons of interesting people, learnt a lot in a fast paced environment, had my ideas heard and accepted. Great place over all.
Cons
Working in shifts, lack of career building opportunities, no wages for interns, no stipend either, not structured enough, not much room for moving up
Advice to Senior Management
It would be nice to "hire" interns even if it is for two weeks. If you can't afford to pay them then offer a stipend for food and travel costs.
Pros
CTV Bellmedia attracts some of the best and brightest in the Television Journalism field in Canada. Pay is competitive within the industry.
Cons
If you aren't in Toronto you will have a tough time getting noticed in this corporation. Local managers have no real management training and are promoted from lower ranks. These promotions are based more on personal connections than ability or aptitude for the job of leading others.
Advice to Senior Management
If you can't take criticism maybe you shouldn't be in a leadership position. People often get frustrated with events or elements of their job. As management it is your job to listen, understand and then react in a calculated way. Don't make "problems" bigger by your actions but smaller. Senior managers need to recognize when the worker bees know more and offer better advice than your middle managers and "senior" newsroom leaders.
Pros
If you're looking for writing material and inspiration, based on many of the people who work there, you will find several asleep at their desks and many others wondering how to pretend they're doing their job. That combined with a few of the great people who work there should be inspiring enough to give you some creative material for a nice piece of theatrical satire about what happens when Canadians try to run a network. Keep your sense of humor and look for the few good people left and you might actually be able to block out the bad ones. Forget about management.
Cons
The company is half union, half non-union, creating a very unpleasant atmosphere. There's a lot of tension in the air, excessive politics and drama which can easily wreak havoc on your day. The pay is below average and there is a constant pretentious attitude that seems to come from management thinking they're doing you a favor just by letting you in the door. The company seems to operate in a bubble state of mind. There are better networks out there that actually promote creativity; something CTVglobemedia hasn't done in years.
Advice to Senior Management
From HR to middle management and all the way up....if you people think you're running this company well, you need to back to school.
Pros
Good pension and health benefits
Cons
Lack of IT Strategic direction and governance
Advice to Senior Management
Transperancy is key to a good leadership. IT should align its objective to meet the organization's overall objective to be the leader in the media industry
Pros
Fast paced and energetic all at once. Lots of opportunities within the company since it owns several other channels. Great place to start a career in broadcasting.
Cons
The HR can be hard to get through. Chances are, you'll get in if you know someone in the company.
Advice to Senior Management
some entry level positions should be more structured. Also, there should be a clear hierarchy of the company with scope for moving up the ladder.
Pros
Pay is good, benefits good and co-workers are bright and friendly. Resources provided to the employees are among the best in the business. Management has its heart in the right place but some improvement is required.
Cons
Communication from management could be improved. Some tech changes need to be thought out better.
Advice to Senior Management
Work harder on communication with employees. Try to recognize good work and reward it.
Pros
The bragging rights for saying you work for a big network outfit, fun projects, ability to see results of projects in relatively short periods.
Cons
Because it is a TV network, there is constant job security fear (to the point where some employees seem to go about their daily jobs with a slightly blank, ghostly fear on their faces.) Unfortunately, this will only increase as the TV industry dies or is swallowed up by the web.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that the web IS your future and make it a priority, rather than just saying you are going to.
Pros
the staff are some of the best reporters in this country and through the years of continuous cuts, they still provide the best local, national and international news in canada.
Cons
The cut backs are affecting the ability to provide quality coverage abroad...the few foreign correspondents left are great but more national, international and local staff (in small markets) are needed to provide more quality coverage over quantity.
Advice to Senior Management
stop cutting news, time to start cutting toronto staff and foreign programming!
Pros
It is a fun environment.
Cons
There are limited advancement opportunities
Advice to Senior Management
CTV needs to take its radio division more seriously. There is little attention paid to it. And it is not appreciated.
