I have been working at Cabela's full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Fun environment, good products, work with lots of great people, advancement opportunities exist if you want them, flexible hours for part-time

    Cons

Mostly just typical retail stuff like rude customers, varying hours based on season, inconsistent expectations from management, and not the best corporate supply chain

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a company we need to be more aware of what sells in different areas and not offer the same generic items at every location.

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Employee discount can be pretty impressive allowing you to get needed items on the cheap. Decent wage for retail. Getting to talk to people about outdoors equipment all day and getting paid for it is pretty cool

    Cons

Company has revenues of 9 billion dollars and all you can pay someone with expert knowledge in outdoors is 9 bucks an hour with no benefits? Also, knock it off with that stupid cc already. Store gets 80 bucks for every referral, they give the outfitter who sells it a dollar and act like they are being martyrs about it. And finally, the last thing someone wants to do after putting up with the general public for 8 or 9 hours on a saturday or sunday is sweep floors or unload trucks (dont you have people for that?). Finally, how about getting some managers with actual people skills? some of your younger managers need to realize who they are speaking to and quit trying to make a name for themselves. All you do is alienate what could end up being great workers with these cocky 'supervisors'.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire/promote people for management with actual people skills (not lazy, incompetent people with the people skills of a tic-tac). Stop being so cheap and actually pay your people for their knowledge, or better yet, put them on commission so they can actually earn what they are worth. Enough with the card, if folks want a CC, they will ask for a CC.

    I worked at Cabela's

    Pros

Easy (somewhat) to schedule around school schedule and great discounts on merchandise. The great employee discounts through third-party programs are probably the only reason people stay employed beyond 6 months to one year. Work isn't too difficult and hourly wage is pretty good for retail. Potential for commission on some sales.

    Cons

Management is absolutely incompetent and clueless. Extremely passive aggressive conflict resolution strategies are employed frequently, and that is if management actually chooses to mitigate conflict AT ALL. Most of the time managers simply ignore glaring issues and hope that they go away or that someone else will solve the problems for them. Cabela's management is a classic example of managers who have been promoted beyond the reach of their skill and experience levels, and thus everyone above the supervisor level is utterly incompetent at their job duties. Some managers spend their day on their computer online shopping and posting to Pinterest instead of helping on the floor when the store is busy, forcing lower level employees to stretch beyond their job duties to pick up the slack. To make matters worse, HR only chooses to pursue small infractions in arbitrary procedures instead of focusing on the real issues that face employees like harassment, discrimination, and internal theft.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employee morale a boost by actually listening and taking action to the repeated employee complaints and suggestions. Even pretending to take action based on these complaints would be an improvement from the current situation. Quit the online shopping, the passive aggression, and the gossip. Focus on being a good leader/manager by setting an example instead of blaming others for your shortcomings.

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

This is a great company to work for. The company benefits and employee discounts and perks are very generous. There are always opportunities to work your way up in the company and to transfer to another store is you decide you want to relocate. Corporate encourages hiring from within first, when filling any new positions that open up countrywide. It's a very sound company, with great products that the company stands behind.

    Cons

As of 12/2/14 I have been with the company for 6 months and have nothing negative to say.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I just wish that whoever prepares the weekly schedules would try to be mindful of giving each Outfitter at least one weekend day off a month, without the outfitter having to put in a request for time off. Weekends are the busiest times in our store, and I think we end up losing Outfitters to burnout, which I believe could be prevented if the schedulers could be mindful to not schedule Outfitters to work every weekend.

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers in my dept are great
    Discount is good
    I've learned a lot

    Cons

"How many club cards have you gotten?" That's the daily question from management. I'm here to help the customers, not push your credit card on them. If they want it then they will seek it out but attacking every single person that walks in the door is obnoxious. Then hitting them with it again in every department? Come on, you can be better than that.
Time off- even when you get approval for time off they schedule you anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the credit cards already and let's get back to being outfitters that give advice on what we know. That's why people come into the store.

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The coworkers were very fun to work with, and learned tons of new things from them. The benefits aren't bad, and the pay is alright. Get to play with guns all day if you work for the gun counter. The actual job is very enjoyable. Great place to shop, and a great family environment.

    Cons

There's not a lot of full time positions available. You will hear the phrase "Club Visa" so much that you start to hear it in your sleep. Management will micromanage the crap out of you, and you will always be under-appreciated. There is a very high turnover in all the departments. Senior management will be quick to point out where you mess up, but won't acknowledge their screw ups. You will also be told that you are expendable, and that there are hundreds of people waiting to take your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit micromanaging the employees. Some of us really do enjoy doing the job, but dogging people into hating their lives is not the way to keep employees for very long. Also, the processes that are required doing certain jobs is way over complicated.
