Piscataway, NJ

Former Employee – worked at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 8 years

ProsBenefits - Healthcare/401k and pension plan and that's about it.

ConsToo much to list. It's a call center environment, turn over rate is extremely high, the call center environment is extremely micro-managed. If you're a good employee and you're nearing 10 years tenure, they'll look for every way they can to get rid of you. I worked there 9+ years , and it happened to me and MANY MANY other employee's before me. They even denied us our unemployment, we had to fight for that too. I fought and won !!!!!! They wouldn't let us have a union - another reason I probably got fired. I was a very good loyal employee, they abused me.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvice to Mr Dolan and upper management - you all need to get off your high horse - quit being so damned greedy.....give the employee's a good raise and give them "job security" . You took people that were good reliable workers and destroyed their lives. And quit flying your damned helicopter to work !

Current Employee – been working at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI worked in Inbound Sales in Piscataway NJ. Most of the people who worked there seem cool for the most part. The company would also come up with different incentives on a monthly basis to reward their top performers.

ConsThis company will force you to lie, cheat, and steal in order for you to get a decent pay. When you do not lie, cheat, and steal, your perfomance suffers. And when you performance suffers, Cablevision wastes no time showing you the door

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement, for once, put yourself in the shoes of your employees. Sit down and anaylze how they really feel. Instead of hammering down your policies, work with your employees to come up with new policies that benefit everyone. Try to be a teammate for once.

ProsDecent Health Insurance, but nothing outstanding.

Cons-They take the "Call Center" concept to the extreme. You are virtually chained to your desk. One bathroom break in the morning, one in the afternoon.
-Outdated Sales Windows system with literally 100's of check boxes that apply to different regions and programs that are almost impossible to keep track of. If you check the wrong boxes you can easily spend 45minutes trying to fix it while the customer gets frustrated.
-Most calls come from Brooklyn and The Bronx; customers with poor credit call over and over again hoping to find someone who will sign them up (even though it can't physically be done). Many customers are immigrants who you just can't understand.
-If you do give a customer the wrong program you get a nasty email in big red print overnight and you have to call the customer and tell them they can't have the program; incredibly unprofessional.
-Pay is $12.00 and hour and the so called "commission" is really a discretionary bonus.
-They have about 150 Call Center Agents in Piscataway and replace about 10 a month -very few people want to stay and take the abuse.
-Worst of all they try to "trick" potential subscribers into buying what they don't want. They do this by summarizing their order REALLY fast and saying under their breath, "you wanted 6 DVR's and The -Gold Package" regardless of what the customer asks for. I'm surprised the FCC hasn't investigated this scam.
-Like I said Said Far Far Away.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake ethics classes.

ProsIt kind of pays the bills, at the expense of your soul. It's a terrible trade off.

ConsCustomers treat you like a piece of trash and the managers hide.

Prosdecent salary & benefits, awesome people to work with as most are down to earth and have a sense of humor

Consschedule isn't flexible, 30 minute lunch breaks, can't use the bathroom when needed unless you have a doctors note to prove you have to make a few trips to the restroom, job is based on the number game & if you don't pull enough numbers they fire you, there is no job security!

Advice to Senior Managementoffer a real lunch break & offer flexible schedules especially for single parents

Current Employee – been working at Cablevision Systems as a contractor

Proslocation and flexibility of working hours, work life balance for the times in life when our priorities and focus shifts to family and spending more time at home

ConsCompany lacks good leadership and long term vision. Projects, initiatives and budget are managed as fire drills. every week consists of the emergency dejour. Organizational silos and self interest drives decisions. Poor employee performance and little innovation. Cablevision is 10 year late coming to the party they need to wake up and move fast if they want to stay around longer.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on innovation, reward business like thinking. Reevaluate all consulting vendors, bring in new vendor that are eager to accommodate lower rates. Performance manage employees and move them out of the comfort jobs. Need to shake out the company and bring in new spirit and drive. Create incentives and goals for cross company performance. Good luck.

Piscataway, NJ

Former Employee – worked at Cablevision Systems full-time for less than a year

ProsGood health insurance
Free or Discounted cable TV.

ConsYour only allowed to go the the bathroom 3 times a day (I actually saved the email).
We are instructed to sell everyone everything (DVR, GOLD, IN DEMAND) no matter what they ask for and do a real quick summation so the customer doesn't catch it.
System is complicated and loaded with errors and roadblocks.
The wrong calls are constantly routed to sales counting against our performance.
If you make the slightest error in entering the order the sale is taken away from you.
Two months of training on broken computers and inaccurate systems
You do not have a job until you pass the two months of training.
Trainees are constantly fired if they do bad on one test.
Supervisors sometimes disappear and when they are there aren't always helpful.
Starting hours are 3pm to Midnight (no exceptions).
Commission is not really commission. Its a 5 level bonus systems that will always favor the more experienced workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop using the excuse "IT'S A CALL CENTER" in order to treat people like slaves.
Get a better, faster system to help us help the customers faster.
How dare you have trainers who announce after training starts that 'YOU ALL DON'T HAVE JOBS YET, I HAVE A JOB"

Former Employee – worked at Cablevision Systems

ProsFounder & chairman, Charles Dolan has always been a 'silent mentor' to me. His wisdom, tenacity and financial agility are positive attributes that guided him in creating a successful company. Excellent benefits

ConsTERRIBLE MANAGEMENT - VPs to managers, who for the most part have no clue as to how to effectively manage the greatest asset (their employees) any company will ever have! Its a shame that the company invest so much in providing leadership seminars etc in an effort to develop its people BUT there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY. Managers do not know how to lead and supervisors have no positive role models so its a game of blind leading blind. This results in very poor employee relationships because managers etc know how to 'add' the numbers but not what they really mean in terms of relationship building, employee job satisfaction/motivation and effective stakeholder- management

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvice to Mr Dolan and his TMT (top management team). Organizations now have to compete in a global economy which comprises of a multi-generational & diverse set of employees. Even though your call centers and other primary contact employees are in a closed system, it is critical to have managers and other leaders who can effectively manage the people. 'You' taught me long ago in one of my first leadership seminars to 'manage the behaviors that drive the numbers' BUT the mgt team at the CT location does the opposite...please listen to your employees and rebuild the legacy created by Mr Dolan Sr.

Morris Plains, NJ

Current Employee – been working at Cablevision Systems

ProsThe benefits are decent, the independence is very good if you don't mind working on your own. The lenghth of vacation time is very good (3 weeks) from the first year.

ConsThe sales goals and product pricing has gone up drastically. The goals are very hard to hit with the fierce competition. This year if you sell at the same levels as last year you earn half as much commissions.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost people in my department work very hard at the job. We pay for our own gas which has gone up considerably over the past few years. We pay for our own phones. If you don't set goals which are achievable, all the best people are going to leave. Every single person in my office is looking to leave. Everyone.

Lower the price!! We shouldn't be priced higher than FIOS. People used to switch to us for fair prices!

Your executives who manage our department are out of touch. Have them walk with the salespeople once a month so they see what we are up against.
