I have been working at Cabot Microelectronics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The team members are supportive and respectful. There is high potential for growth in this Company. Lateral movement within the Company into other business units is also entertained.

    Cons

Competitive and high pressure (could be pro or cons depending on personality type). I have no complains!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue inspiring the employees by giving them creative space to continue and grow.

Organized company, but your experience depends on your supervisor

I worked at Cabot Microelectronics as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The company is really good about getting new employees set up and ready to hit the ground running. My last job took around 6 weeks just to give you a company email address, but CMC got it done in a matter of days.

    Cons

My supervisor was pretty passive aggressive and didn't communicate well at all. On top of that, she claimed to others that we had "discussed" issues when they were barely mentioned in passing! This wouldn't have been an issue except for the fact that I was terminated because of a "discussed" issue that I was under the impression had been resolved. In retrospect, said issue seems to have been an excuse to fire me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate to your employees better. And that means doing more than barely mentioning something and then claiming it was discussed in detail.

    Cabot Microelectronics Intern Experience

I worked at Cabot Microelectronics as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The work- life balance is superb as employees have an abundance of time off. Also, they have great benefits for their employees including a 401k contribution for interns. The people are very friendly and helpful. For every intern there is a mentor and a boss, sometimes several. Interns are separated based upon what division they contribute to. The company encourages interns to advance their skills, particularly in Six Sigma, and will put you through certification training if a training program occurs during the internship. I was only able to participate in a tool training for Six Sigma as a formal certification program did not occur during my time. The company also encourages interns to talk to the leadership and broaden their knowledge in positions beyond their positions. The company highly encourages continuous improvement.

    Cons

Due to the abundance of time off, employees are often out of the office and it can be difficult to meet with others to make progress and decisions about your project. The company is disconnected between offices and divisions. Usually, directors only pay attention to high level metrics of company roles and do not understand the day-to-day responsibilities or processes. While the company values continuous improvement, employees are also wary of change which is counterintuitive. Management tends to implement improvement without the input of the affected employees. Also, the company does not give references for former employees, which is particularly important for interns trying to obtain future employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow mentors to give references for interns so they can gain further employment. Also, understand the needs and limitations of employee's roles.

I have been gone for a couple of years but working there has been the highlight of my career thus far. Challenging but rewarding environment with plenty of positive people on board. I would stongly encourage anyone thinking about applying here.

    Cons

None that I can think of unless you are not willing to pull your own weight!

I worked at Cabot Microelectronics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I was at Cabot Microelectronics for 12 years--started there when they were parent of Cabot Corp, went thru the IPO, etc. It's a great company to work for. Work/life balance is a strong value and benefits are consistent with this including a generous time off policy.

    Cons

Nothing comes to mind--on the whole working here was a great experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Again, nothing comes to mind. Overall great!

    I worked at Cabot Microelectronics

    Pros

Very supportive of work life balance - always allowed people to address their home front if needed.

    Cons

Company has very limited upside. The core business is dying, has a lot of competition from overseas. Customers are often unhappy, causing tension through the organization. New business does not seem promising. All in all, not a great future - you can only cut costs so many times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be bold regarding the future
