    Pros

Cal Dive have an impeccable safety record. They pay well. The best health ins. plan. Really good training for your certs.

    Cons

Getting enough work to pay your bills can be troublesome but the whole dive industry has suffered from the BP oil spill. Benefits are good. time off is better than any other kind of work you can find.

I have been working at Cal Dive full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They gave fairly descent raises to me, but they pay well under what other companies pay. They gave me a chance with no experience, felon and no HS diploma/GED.

    Cons

Every Winter you get laid off if you are not up on the position ladder. They are now going out of business and I have been notified of permanent layoff.

I worked at Cal Dive full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits, gym at each location. Great food courts and ALOT of employees. Living and working in San Diego is amazing.

    Cons

Quotas for (minimum monthly expectation) enrolling students, little help from mgmt., bi-annual layoffs for those who don't enroll a specific amount of students per month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about students and their future, and less about money and the bottom line.

I worked at Cal Dive full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent fast paced offshore construction company. A client-focused management professional company leading exceptional customer service to corporate clients.

    Cons

This industry, as well as all other energy dependent industries, has a seasonal slow period during the winter months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Must keep strong management leaders in order to train lower subordinates in all phases of facility management. Experience managing budgets, invoicing and other financials is a preference.

I have been working at Cal Dive full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the largest, if not the largest dive company in the Gulf of Mexico. They possess the largest fleet and have potential.

    Cons

Management is lost, no plan for the future. Diving work in general is very slow. The equipment and fleet is old and many oil companies want newer equipment that Cal Dive just does not possess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forward thinking planning, not just blind reaction and emotional decisions.

I have been working at Cal Dive full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Cal Dive has decent pay, good benefits and the job itself can be very fun. They are accommodating to vacation and family needs and often try to do the right thing.

    Cons

There are way too many middle managers who are constantly trying to justify their job and when something comes along that needs an answer no one is willing to risk anything. Advancement has become stagnant and political prowess will get you farther than quality or hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline some of these managers and hold them more accountable. Make training more optional, you have a training department yet you can't get into a training class. Dive tenders and give divers a chance to advance. Limit the amount of core personnel on vessels and stop compartmentalising people, all divers should be well rounded and we will be again when core groups disappear,

I have been working at Cal Dive

    Pros

al dive uses a core group system for their divers. This is great if you are part of a core group...It is very difficult to become a member of a core group.

    Cons

If you are not part of a core group you will starve!!! This is the situation I am in. I love cal dive but I would have been better off to choose a different diving company to work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job of spreading the work around. It is tought to watch certain divers get rich while others struggle. This is the only complaint that I have with cal dive.
