    Pros

Fun to see the new fabrics on a regular basis

    Cons

They entice prospective new-hires with dreams on design and creativity, where as it is strictly a retail establishment and management puts constant pressure on all employees to SELL, SELL,SELL!!

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging the sales staff and put people in the H.R. Dept. who actually listen to the employees who call asking for help with their insane managers.......you do nothing but sweep complaints under the already dirty rug .

    Pros

Working with the public to help make their decorating ideas a reality can be fun and rewarding.
Number of products we offer means variety to day to day activities.
Employee discount. Flexibility of schedule. Location close to home offers short commuting time.
    Workplace relationships generally good.

    Cons

    Managerial turnover.
Long learning curve involved for all positions causes discouragement for new employees. Training not well organized. Lack of opportunity for advancement within store environment.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to listen to the people who are actually working on the front lines with our customers.

    Pros

Great learning tools and really fabulous textiles although there is room for improvement here.

    Cons

Slow to bring on new color books of textiles in popular color requests, i.e., greens, purples. Not enough silks for customers to choose from and could really use a greater selection of upholstery grade fabrics. Lots of choices for light use, drapery, bedding, etc., but could really use more in upholstery that is more current. Internal technology really lags behind. Hand held devices and smart phones should be at the forefront plus software that helps customers see real time renderings of things like window treatments would be really beneficial to all design consultants when they are working with clients. It is often very difficult for clients to "visualize" what a designer is suggesting for a "window treatment" of "upholstery", these tools are critical to the design process and only serve to enhance the overall ability to "sell the design", something that Calico seems to be only concerned about, however, those at "Corporate" are very slow to integrate the very things that are needed to generate more people coming into the store to begin their design process. Very lax in "re-branding". Marketing and advertising are VERY IMPORTANT in keeping your name in front of the public. If you don't, people think you have gone out of business. If the company wants to justify the kinds of prices it charges for their products, you really need to "sell" people on the quality of your services and that doesn't come from "asking" your "hourly-paid design staff to think outside of the box", they aren't paid enough to come up with a strategy to "bring customers into the store".

    Advice to Management

STOP MICRO-MANAGING!!!!!! Listent to your overly qualified design team. They are the backbone of your business. Micro-managing creates anger, resentment, deceit,an overall "I don't care atttitude." Never throw your team "under the bus" which is someting that is done or at least feels like it is done at the store in in North Orange County.

    Pros

You learn technical details regarding custom work in window treatments, upholstery, furniture, and decorating projects. You learn about fabrics and how to quote and become a good sales person.

    Cons

There is little area to grow as a newbie in the field. There is also little pay raise, or no pay raise for part-time employees. Only FT employees are the Manager and Design Consultant.

    Advice to Management

Compensate your Sales Associates for their sales, not only if they make a goal. There is little monitoring of sales. I and another associate felt like the Manager was giving sales to certain Associates and using favoritism for certain employees to make their goals. Not a good environment.

    Pros

freedom of creativity and great selection of materials to work with.

    Cons

the way commission rules are set up, no one is able to make fair sales. most of the rules are very vaugue leaving sales reps to battle it out among themselves ,who gets what part of the sale if anything at all.

    Advice to Management

they should be required to work on commisioned sales for 3 months to get a good experience as to what is wrong with the rules of commission.

    Pros

Great hours for retail - 10 to 5 and closed on Sunday
Closed Christmas Eve too allows family time
Great scheduling no "On Call" hours like other retailers
Pay is better than other retailers
great environment - not the same job every day
this is retail - it is a shame not every one realizes it because the hours are awesome!

    Cons

    Personality conflicts/pettiness among the staff
Light traffic makes days pass slowly
Customers complain about the price but do not understand quality - if you want cheap go to JoAnn Fabrics!

    Advice to Management

Market better - email with special promos to get people in the door
We are always on sale, which makes it difficult to close sales.
Corporate office staff and management teams are on different wavelengths.
We need to get people in the door and that should be our main priority

Interesting and generally pleasant, but most employees are grossly underpaid for the amount of work and responsibility.

    Pros

Lovely surroundings for those interested in home decor with generous employee discount. The atmosphere is somewhat casual and management is usually willing accommodate unexpected scheduling needs.

    Cons

The work of creating custom decorating products is extremely detailed and errors can be very costly for the company/store. The low rates of pay do not fairly compensate for the amount of knowledge, work and responsibily required of sales associates and labor coordinators.

    Advice to Management

Stop underestimating the value of input from employees who work on the "front line". Experienced sales associates and labor coordinators have real life knowledge of their store's market and demographics. Require more professionalism from store managers and district managers. Make wages commensurate with the amount of responsibility expected of employees.

    Pros

Customers are wonderful and fun to work with, co-workers and store management are great. Employee discount was great, is still o.k. Great outlet for creative minds.

    Cons

Bert Kerstetter made that company successful. He believed in rewarding the employees and listening to what they had to say. When he left the man who took his place and his "team" ruined the company. The owners are struggling to keep it afloat, but they lost the company identity along the way, and that is what made them a unique company that was great to work for.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the rest of Stuarts team, i.e. district managers who's threatening tactics create a non-productive work environment. Try to find a way to re-establish what the company was founded on. Of course Stuart and team let go all of us who remembered the way it was because it threatened their "new" concept.
