    Pros

This is the entry and development class for the Insurance Examiner series. Incumbents are assigned duties and responsibilities commensurate with their respective background and training. Positions are permanently allocated to this classification when a major portion of the duties performed does not include the more responsible, varied and difficult assignments found in the Insurance Examiner series.

    Cons

 Demonstrated accounting knowledge and experience, and ability to read and interpret financial statements.  Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Possess good organizational and problem solving skills.  Ability to work as a team member and be flexible and responsive to various tasks assigned.  Willingness to travel and work away from the headquarters office including out-of-state travel.  Experience in the use of computer application programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, etc.

    Pros

Retirement benefits and job stability. The leads and coworkers are very helpful and will bring you up to speed. This department fosters a positive work atmosphere.

The State budget affects promotion opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the leads to lead and lead from the back as a supportive manager. (Some managers are already doing this.)

    Pros

Laid back, easy 9-5, excellent benefits, TONS of time off, plenty of state holidays, union-mandated 5% annual raise, plenty of young professionals to network with and get to know

    Cons

No challenge/growth, little opportunities for promotion - you have to promote outside of your unit or wait 5-7 years to promote. Team workload inequitably distributed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at California Department of Insurance

    Pros

The CalPERS retirement pension and overall health benefits are fantastic.

    Cons

There's a large number of people who have had the same job for a very long time. In my experience, if you aren't promoted, and dont leave, then you're in a rut and ineffective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep all of the Poizner reforms in place.

I have been working at California Department of Insurance

    Pros

The Department is a solid place to work if your primary concerns are job security and work/life balance.

    Cons

Very little opportunity for career advancement. Job skills are not very transferable, unless you are interested in a career in the insurance industry. Because the Insurance Commissioner is an elected official, many job duties are heavily influenced by politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a significant need for training and better management of day-to-day operations. Some management are unable to make decisions on issues, which directly results in inefficiencies and confusion about the Department's objectives.
