A supportive culture where you can learn and feel like you are contributing

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Sacramento, CA

I have been working at California Dtsc full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThere is a culture of openness. There are not too many layers of bureaucracy..but this also means fewer promotional opportunities. There us a good work-life balance and there are many dedicated and educated staff. The Director is really turning things around compared to previous administrations.

ConsThe workforce is aging and there is no mentoring and little upward mobility. There are some whiners and complainers. The previous directors squandered overhead on pet projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease stay, we need continuity of leadership for a change. The current director 2014 is a realist and fiscal conservative who is turning things around. Some old attitudes remain and with any luck they will retire. Please do not bring back retired annuitants.

Work that makes a difference but financially and professionally stagnant

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at California Dtsc full-time

ProsYou get to work on projects that really make an impact.

ConsOpportunities for growth are severely limited. The scientists are dramatically under paid compared to the engineers. No motivation to be more productive.

Dept. of Toxics (DTSC) has a toxic work environment

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at California Dtsc full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you are one of the chosen ones, you get flexible working hrs. Pay and conditions can be good for some.

ConsExtremley entrenched burocracy. Management uses the state employee support program to punish employees that speak out. Orgnaization is in constantly state of reorg. Directors come and go, and have no power over middle managers that have carved out silos of power over decades. Those that work get more work, those that don't work don't work. The place is a mess. Pay is low and stagnent. No advancement unless you are a "yes" man. Protect the environment... I don't think so.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeave already - so that more motivated and educated communicators can run the organization. This organization should be absorbed into the Water Board or completley disbanded in order to save tax payers money

Typical Government Job

Hazardous Substances Scientist (Current Employee)
Berkeley, CA

I have been working at California Dtsc full-time for more than a year

ProsGood work-life balance
Some friendly coworkers
Steady job that is very connected to environmental consulting companies

ConsLow morale in the company
Not many growth opportunities within the organization
Most people in the organization 50+
I felt unequipped to talk to environmental consultants and customers with years and years of corporate experience. Frankly, the environmental sector of the government is very backwards in its understanding new methods/technologies in the field.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess office politics
More support for teams
