I have been working at California Endowment full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

9/80 work schedule, great people, lots of parties (birthday, baby & bridal showers, etc.), great benefits (401K, pension plan, PTO, medical, dental, vision, gym reimbursement, Metro, etc), great building, good Café food and prices

    Cons

Kronos as timesheet software, one Director that's omnipotent, EmPerform as performance review software is a bit overkill, long Café cashier lines, frustrating elevator buttons, unmarked no parking zones

    Advice to Management

Like anywhere, mgmt should definitely solicit and listen to its staff that are actually carrying out policies before changing them: we have so many workgroups, committees and task forces w/ little info as to when they meet or what their results are, and then boom, an updated policy

    Pros

Beautiful building, great benefits, flexible working hours

    Cons

Hypocrisy reigns supreme. Committed to the community and to health but disrespectful of it's employees. Bad behavior is rewarded and favoritism rules the day.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to employees.

I worked at California Endowment full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, a lot of time off, bonuses (if you are friends with top management)

    Cons

Run as a mom and pop shop, extremely political, no transparency, inner circles defining the way the foundation is run

    Advice to Management

Recently they removed the main culprit for the above but I doubt culture has changed much.

Great company to work for! They provide an excellent compensation package and competitive salary. In addition they work a 9/80 schedule which means you work 9 hour days but get every other off.

    Cons

Senior management takes a long time to execute decisions.

    Pros

Salary Benefits Environment Mission Size Security Events Programs Diversity Facility Corporate Responsibility Strategic Plan Community Investment

    Cons

Weak people who are good politicians are rewarded Satisfied with mediocrity Performance Appraisal system does not indicate true value of work

    Advice to Management

Be honest with employees, do not reward bad behavior, respect a job well done and have a true system of checks and balances where employees are safe in reporting bad behavior of bosses and supervisors

  8. If the work environment were as positive as the company's contributions to communities, this would be a great workplace.

I worked at California Endowment full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You'll work with educated, passionate colleagues. Good benefits including flexible workweek option.

    Cons

Staff can expect to be treated like disposable cattle. Workloads are extremely heavy. No breathing room between projects since upper management love to come up with ideas with no concept of the work involved to accomplish lofty goals. Unfortunately, this is an environment where everyone must simply grin and bear it.

    Advice to Management

Management is disconnected from the commitment and passion of staff. Place value on the people who work hardest for you. This work environment is neither sustainable nor healthy.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

It has a strong mission, and commitment to living its values

    Cons

The executive team is overmatched, the operations of TCE is totally disconnected to the actual work of TCE, and the senior management is to transitional to actually stabilze TCE

    Advice to Management

The CEO should look for a team that has the ability to replace the current management structure.

Good benefits, lots of smart people work there, a mission that in theory is great to be a part of

    Cons

total disconnect between employees and executive team, no room for promotion, employees all overworked

    Advice to Management

stop trying to run this org like a profit-seeking company...it is getting in the way of the mission
