Great Place for Self-Starters

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at CallidusCloud

ProsCallidus has hands-down the best product in the marketplace and hundreds of happy customers. While Callidus is the market leader and the largest dedicated SPM vendor, it still offers the fast pace, challenges, and career-growth of a start-up company. Self-starters can move up quickly, take on more responsibility, and increase their earnings.

ConsBecause Callidus is lean and functions like a start-up, it is not for everyone. Self-starters thrive, while those that are used to direct management telling them what to do daily will feel in the dark or past by at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementStay laser focused on profitability. Callidus has a great solution and company vision: it just needs to be communicated with enthusiam from the top more frequently.

Callidus has positioned itself for significant growth and profitability. Well done by the Management team!

Account Executive (Current Employee)

ProsCallidus software has the strongest offering in the marketplace and an enviable list of marquis clients many of whom are included in the Fortune 500. More importantly, of these clients, 60% of them have been doing business with Calildus since early part of the decade (1999-2001). That is a tremendous vote of confidende in this era of rapid change.

ConsStandard con for a small company includes less overall resources and support. While this is natural for any SMB, the rewards at Callidus far outweigh the risks.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo one will ever complain of having too much information coming from product management. Although great strides have been made - a little more communication is a great thing for all employees.

Leslie deserves a little more credit than he is getting; given the economic downturn we're facing.

ProsImmediate manager is awesome. Never a boring day. Product 'stickiness' is amazing thus Callidus will be around for a long while. Core functionality of product works great when rules are followed, designs are implemented properly and reason is observed. Company has redoubled efforts to achieve profitability. Company has survived (thus far) in the worst economic downturn in recent history...

ConsWe act like startup, but we operate like a large company. We need to operate like a startup and act like a large company. RIFs cut too deep into the talent pool; many of our best have joined the competition. It would be better if we weren't fighting ourselves.

Advice to Senior ManagementStick to the basics and set the focus on 'value'. You have the winning product; sell it. Eliminate the distractions. Admit your mistakes; act with humility (don't show humility) and share your plan to move forward while keeping your top talent.

Einstein once said, "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."

Good company with bad management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at CallidusCloud

ProsTechnology leadership, work ethics, challenging work - leader in sales compensation management software. Gain knowledge in developing SaaS based product line.

ConsUnable to breakthrough financial issues. Regular layoffs that affect employee morale. Lack of career growth due to constant downsizing and scrapping projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile making the company profitable is a very good idea, proper planning and development of tools is better in the long run than cost optimization via layoffs.

Strong individual contributors.

Compensation Consultant (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at CallidusCloud

ProsConsiderate travel. Callidus only asks project teams to travel on Monday and Thursdays, returning every weekend. Clients sometimes require a different schedule, but Callidus typically sets the travel schedule.
Good teamwork. The project teams work well together.
People are friendly and professional. People don't yell at their co-workers and they don't use foul language.
You are close to the product, if there is something wrong with a Callidus Product that you use for your job, you are at the same company where the product is built, so you have insider influence on product changes or bug fixes.

ConsPoor IT infrastructure. Callidus uses Sharepoint, however it is hard to find what you need, and there is something wrong where it takes 15 minutes to upload a 80 KB file unless you are working in San Jose.
Work/Life Balance. You are greatly rewarded for working 40 hours a week on billable projects. If you work less than 40 hours, you are not rewarded. You have to make up for Sick time and staff meeting. And if you help someone else out on their project, you start a big effort to get assigned to their project or you have to make up for that time too. The individual contributors here are willing to help each other out because it is the right thing to do, but it is penalized.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind different ways to make money off of client services that does not destroy work/life balance for people working on projects.

Excellent company to work for.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at CallidusCloud

ProsCallidus was adept at hiring quality people for thier positons which made working there easy. Solid bunch of professional people.

ConsSometime communication was limited between upper management and lower mangement. Overall there was very little in the con department in describing Callidus.

Advice to Senior ManagementAt this time I wouldn't presume to offer advice on how to run a company that size. Almost everything they did, policy wise, was to make the company more proftiable and kept employee moral in mind.

Promising products in an exciting space with good smart people and terrible communication, organization and leadership.

Consultant (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at CallidusCloud

ProsExcellent smart and committed people in the individual contributor roles. Some good 1st level managers too. Nice digs and great customers as well as lots of travel to good places if you like that kind of thing. The main product is the leader in the space and very mature while still technically challenging and the other products are based on industry leading technologies like Informatica, Actuate, Business Objects and Lombardi Teamworks. At Callidus you get to work on business critical issues and processes for large important clients and the work is challenging and interesting. You get to apply your skills to issues that can really make a difference for a company, its employees and shareholders.

ConsThe communication between management to the staff and especially from headquarters to anyplace outside San Jose is abysmal. Interdepartmental communication is also almost non-existant and for example, engineering does not communicate with other departments at all , especially not with anyone in Client Services (rarely return phone calls or e-mails) nor does Sales talk to much of anyone outside Sales. In addition there is a culture of silence and even fear because employees are not encouraged to talk to anyone outside of their group nor to suggest ways to improve execution or criticize anything. If suggestions are made they are mostly ignored. I once heard a Directory and VP talking about the lack of communications and the Director who had been an employee for many years said "we have never been any good at internal communication". It seems like middle level management has a real divide and conquer mentality as far as those who report to them are concerned. Departments are almost totally siloed off from one another and all employees outside of San Jose seem to be considered 2nd class citizens. Customer projects are poorly run and the PMs will almost never say no to customers and rarely write change orders. Everything is about maximizing billable hours and getting more billable hours and little attention seems to be paid to planning or successful execution. Much of project work seems to be a Chinese fire drill to bring in "exports" to fight fires that the clients have caused by being solely interrupt driven with no one to push back. In fact though the Client Services VPs have overseen a reduction in consulting staff from about 250 after the Compensation Technologies acquisition to fewer than 75 now. The strategic direction has been muddled to say the least over the last few quarters. They used to derive almost half their income from consulting and now that part of the company has been almost totally dismantled with an associated loss in domain knowledge. Now the company is betting the farm on a transition from On Demand and On Premise installations to a full SaaS model, but they are starting the transition without a proven SaaS product and customers. After close to a dozen rounds of layoffs the morale at Callidus is terrible and once the job market turns around there will be a mass exodus of all the best people. Lastly, the product management and quality of releases is so poor as to be almost non-existant and this needs to be rectified. There has not been a single release in memory that didn't have significant functionality that worked in a previous release and was broken in the next requireing patches and such. In addition the product is so hard to install that is is literally almost unusable for an individual in order to develop comp plans alone withour help and probably three fourths of all Callidus consultants don't have access to working software of the necessary version most of the time. In short, the company is almost a complete shambles internally and keeping up a brave (or ignorant) facade on the outside.

Advice to Senior ManagementClarify a working strategic plan that doesn't bet the farm on vaporware and take much better care of the employees you have left. Finally, you ought to bet the farm on changing company culture and communication and having a functional well integrated organization rather than a dysfunctional mess with great people that you have today. Also product quality and integration are so poor that it may yet kill the company so listen to the technical people who use the product and hold your engineer's feet to the fire to fix the problems.

Worst Managed Company Ever

Senior Consultant (Former Employee)
Austin, TX

I worked at CallidusCloud

ProsThe concept and tool UI is meaningful in ways that most can grasp quickly and probably have never had a chance to see before. Talented staff to work with..management, terrible to work with.

ConsThe middle management is some of the most incompetent and least skilled at managing projects I have ever had the displeasure of working with. No project plans (seriously), terrible at managing expectations with their customers (including costs, deadlines and supportable technologies), statements of work you can drive a Mac Truck right through, and total lack of open communications within the organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementHold full 360 reviews..not the bogus Halogen one sided affairs. Tighten your statements of work by actually listening to the field services personnel. Retain talent at any costKeep talent on board. Too many RIF's of very talented people. Change your model of services in the field. Not everyone will subscribe to the On-Demand product/service offering, so why not embrace on site and reclaim your lost 50% of revenue?
