I worked at Calpine full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Better benefits than most (but pay is super low)

    Cons

Most political organization I have ever worked at. No one cooperates or works with each other in order to minimize personal liability. Even with departments (looking at you, IT and compliance) managers are highly competitive and their only goals are self-serving. A lot of employees exist who are either incompetent and/or barely working. A handful of these unfortunately happen to be VPs. The company refuses to invest in it's costs (IT, compliance, safety, etc.) and it gets what it pays for. Everyone is stressed out and afraid to deal with anyone outside their department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage departments to work together to solve company problems. Pay your employees what they deserve to stop getting people out of the bottom of the barrel. Use leadership skills to bring employees to where you want them, not fear to push them there instead. Critically evaluate the performance of each employee and get rid of the dead weight. Make an effort to reduce the unnecessary work load on the each department and carefully reevaluate each department's role.

I have been working at Calpine full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good, including healthcare. Compensation is avg for industry. There is not much more to say that is good.

    Cons

    Environment
Workplace is noisy on trade floor. People wear headphones and barely talk to one another. The environment is not conducive to teamwork.

    Work/Life Balance issues
    Lack of telework policy.
Years of experience is not counted in vacation policy.

    Management
Incompetency is rampant. Trust between employees and management does not exist. Plans are kept secret.

    Career/Promotion
There is no career counseling. Promotions are political not professional.

    Accountability
    No one is held accountable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Terminate poor performing employees.
    Establish a career counseling plan.
    Reestablish an "anonymous" survey.

    Pros

I got to work on an entire project and set all tasks to complete it within the summer. I learned a lot about what needed to be done and got experience in project management.

    Cons

Out of all the engineers, only 3 were electrical in our department. It's a lot of work for a small team of people.

I worked at Calpine full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

No good reason to work for this company. It looks good from outside, but it is horrible once you get in

    Cons

Management changes every day, Directors and above make 150k to millions as as bonus. working guys get peanuts. No career development..if you are technical and you started earning little bigger, they try to remove you by pissing you like demoting, making you to report to your junior, rating you bad in review, by stopping pay raise etc. No moral, no ethic..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to be moral, ethical and look after working class in the company..provide career development plans rather demoting/pissing off employees by various nasty techniques
