I have been working at Calpine full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, fair pay, annual stock awards and bonuses. Great coworkers. Managers understand work life balance is important. Good PTO.

    Cons

Need more career progression info. Pointless metrics used to track things no one really cares about. Corporate departments do not always work well with plants. They put out various guidelines or procedures that have nothing to do with policy and just make a lot of work.

    Advice to Management

Plants need more cooperation and support from corporate departments. Make salary ranges available so employees can better plan career progression.

I worked at Calpine (Less than a year)

    Pros

They use clean energy to make power and aren't as vulnerable to oil prices. Locations throughout the country.

    Cons

You work with a skeleton work force as management seemed to care more about MW/number of employees ratio being as high as possible.

I have been working at Calpine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, other employees and the building is absolutely beautiful.

    Cons

The corporate office doesn't promote from within, even if you're qualified. They treat you like a commodity and like a number. The managers (including directors and VP's) aren't held accountable OR reviewed like the "minions" are. If you think hard work will get you anywhere here, think again. They'll promote from within only specific people, and they promote people running departments that have never been in that department before (completely without ANY experience). I don't know anyone that enjoys working here, except for those "special" people that happen to get promoted. They give you so much work that you can't breathe and then you get into trouble if you don't do all of the tasks without asking for help or asking for another way to do things. If you can play the political game, and enjoy it, then this is the place for you!

    Advice to Management

Treat people with respect and people will enjoy coming to work.

    Pros

Many opportunities to work hard and prove yourself. Laid back environment. Friendly people. Health insurance is fantastic. Casual Fridays. Downtown office location is easy to get to and close to home.

    Cons

If you are young, you sometimes do not get taken seriously by those with more seniority. Some areas have more opportunities for career advancement than others.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on career advancement and career paths for high performers.
