    Pros

Many opportunities to work hard and prove yourself. Laid back environment. Friendly people. Health insurance is fantastic. Casual Fridays. Downtown office location is easy to get to and close to home.

    Cons

If you are young, you sometimes do not get taken seriously by those with more seniority. Some areas have more opportunities for career advancement than others.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on career advancement and career paths for high performers.

    Pros

    Good career experience
    Good benefits and decent compensation.

    Cons

    Training Is poor.
Career progression is existent but not well thought out.
Promotion compensation is subjective and barely keeps up with inflation
Rules don't apply to management and are bypassed to get what management wants.
The people making the company run are of course treated to worst.
    Good ole boy mentality

    Advice to Management

Develop a full proof training program and invest in the resources to implement that program. Next stop hiring managers who have poor people skills. Hire managers who are educated; forward thinking is essential to company success and empowering your people. Train your managers more! Hold your management accountable for their actions, and evaluate them frequently. The power plant technician is equally as important as the corporate business manager do not treat them differently.

    Pros

There are some really good people in Calpine. Although there isn't enough in the right positions to steer this company in another direction.

    Cons

Because of the CEO's cut throat mantallity no VP, director or manager will tell him anything he doesn't want to here else they would be looking for another job. There is no clear focus or vision. They preach a different story but that is the party line. Calpine may look like a good company from the outside looking in but once in you realize just how disfunction al the company is. At the plant's the staff back stab each other due to insecurity that originates as a result of the lack of leadership, support and direction. Work is cast down to the plant's from Corp "support groups" that bury the plants overworked staff in a continuous unplanned volley of administrative fire drills. Crisis management is non stop. Keeping the plant's running is challenging to say the least given the
skeleton staff (head count!), budget (forecasting games) and years of mismanagement.
Every plant run as an island. Working at Calpine will male you feel like you are doing all you can do (everyday) just to keep your head above water to survive.

    Advice to Management

Stop looking at your shoes and speak up when Thad asks if anyone has anything to say. The people that truly keep the plant's running need your support. If real change doesn't occur it is time to bail like so many good employees have done already.

    Pros

Great co-workers, motivating environment and everyone wants to help you learn as much as possible. Managers have an open door policy which makes everything a lot easier.

    Cons

Was asked to handle more responsibilities, with no pay raise, while balancing being a full time student. Managers would ask to skip school to work on projects.

    Advice to Management

Let interns know that school is priority over everything. Lot of potential for intern growth.
