I have been working at Calvin College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Your employers tend to be great and you will learn a lot if you are in a job other than cleaning crew. Coworkers are often students so you have a lot in common.

    Cons

Awful pay. Yes it is a college job but I was a sound technician doing work that people get paid huge salaries a year to do. And we were paid less than the students calling people to ask for donations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about increasing hourly pay even a little bit.

Former Employee - Undergraduate Research Assistant in Grand Rapids, MI

I worked at Calvin College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I worked here as a student researcher in the chemistry department for 2 years. I also worked as a teaching assistant for a CHEM 105 lab. Calvin is an awesome place to gain some work/research experience because you can genuinely get to know the professors in your department and they can get to know you. The professors that I worked for have become lifelong friends as well as excellent employment references.

    Cons

It can be difficult to break into the chemistry research "circle". Get to know a professor before you fill out an online application; it could save you a lot of time and trouble. A lot of the jobs posted for chemistry summer research essentially belong to someone else but are posted as open positions as a formality, so talk to professors in December/January and ask them what their research lab looks like for the fall.

    Recommends
