I worked at Cambridge Assessment as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

I worked at the DC10 facility in Whittlesford, which was conveniently located so I could walk to work. The wage, for the work we did, was possibly a little generous, and we could be a little flexible with hours (at least in the office, unsure of other departments).

    Cons

The management seemed distracted and unsure of themselves, and failed to take on board staff suggestions. Select, the recruitment agency that supplied most of the staff, seemed friendly but incompetent at times, failing to pay people on time and often assigning people inappropriately to tasks (although that may have, again, been management). Also, the canteen food was ridiculously variable in quality.

Listen to your staff and stop paying attention to buzzwords.

I worked at Cambridge Assessment full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good location
    Good benefits
    Good social calendar
    Good on site catering facilities
Probably good as a first job

    Cons

Limited to non existent career progression
    Secretive and devious HR managers
    Un-fair appraisal system
Managers take credit for the work you do
Senior staff seem disengaged and removed from the 'real world'
No genuine recognition or understanding of the contribution you make
Disproportionate balance of workload amongst staff
Took on new staff and threw expensive training at them but failed to invest in the staff they have
Biggest regret about leaving the organisation...that I didn't do it sooner!!!

    Pros

The people are generally willing and eager to help, though this is not universal.

    Cons

Lions lead by donkeys, would be my summation of my experiences.

I worked at Cambridge Assessment as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Pays better than other temp roles in Nottingham. Well-organised. Large number of markers so quite sociable during breaks. Free hot drinks provided from a machine.

    Cons

No longer guarantee of contract length - if the team marks faster than predicted, everyone loses days' work at the end. Can be quite boring to sit silently for long hours while marking. Some markers don't seem as skilled, or to be taking it seriously, which raises questions about how accurately students' papers are graded (not all are now double-marked).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to contract lengths predicted. Reinstate double marking for all papers.

I have been working at Cambridge Assessment

    Pros

    Relaxed work environment
    Good facilities
Cheap childcare fees because of association with the University
    Varied work assignments
    Never stands still
    Good anual social events

    Cons

    Weak management and leadership
Politics always seems to get in the way of doing what's right
Value academic background higher than commercial experience

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage Talent and work hard to ensure staff are valued. Make Work-Life-Integration real for employees.

I have been working at Cambridge Assessment

    Pros

The pension is fantastic and the fact that the office is open for only 12 hours a day means that you are unlikely to be doing too much work. The only real pressure is the pressure you put on yourself.

    Cons

It is my belief that the company does not actually like, or trust, the development department. The developers have been sidelined about how the development process should be changed resulting in an incredibly bureaucratic process that is going to stall development whereas agile development (in my opinion) would deliver significantly better results for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole culture needs to change, the business and the development teams need to be brought closer together. Listen to the developers when they say that they are not satisfied

    I worked at Cambridge Assessment

    Pros

Final Salary Pension with flexible working arrangements commonplace. Friendly people. A culture of "lifers" with a very low staff churn rate. Very stable and unbeatable job security.

    Cons

Not challenging. Politics, politics, politics. They want plodders who do what they are told - high-achievers will get frustrated. Medium sized company with large company style red-tape. The non-profit status allows some really large errors in judgment from senior management to occur without those responsible being held accountable. Very poor remuneration within the IT sector of the organisation which is limited by company wide paybands

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward good people to keep them. Offshoring / outsourcing is not always cost effective. Listen to your staff! Listen to the business.
