Excellent first job that opens doors for a strong future in finance.

    Consulting Associate (Current Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

ProsExcellent exposure to multiple asset classes. You get to work with extremely intelligent and knowledgeable people. Reasonable hours and a good work/life balance. Good benefits and vacation, and management is very reasonable about letting people take vacation. They also try to make sure to stay informed about employee morale.

ConsLack of ability to be promoted beyond a certain level without a masters degree. Very low pay relative to the rest of the finance industry. The work can be very cyclical, so there are times when there is very little to do and other times when there is way too much to do.

This is no place for advancement, unless you have an MBS

    Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsThe people. The comradry between the workers is amazing. Management (Consultants and above) do not support their people, so the staff gives the support.

ConsThere is no communication in the company. I know of many people who left the company, and their emails are still active, and an announcement was not sent. There is little recognition at Cambridge. Those who pass the CPA are not acknowledged, nor are daily achievements. Money is the bottomline- and that is all that matters. This past Administrative Professionals Day, the staff was given a Chipotle lunch- management did not acknowledge their contributions.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest that communication be better. Both negative and positive feedback, when needed, should be given when events occur, not on a yearly basis.

    Decent work experience, terrible pay.

    Investment Performance Associate (Former Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsInvestment consulting experience. Lots of exposure to largest institutional investors. Cambridge offers a good entry level job for young professionals interested in the investment business. Cambridge experience also looks good on the resume if applying to graduate school. Promotions come easily and are based more on time at the firm and less on performance.

ConsCompensation is very low. Benefits are OK. Most employees could probably find jobs paying 50-100% more than Cambridge pays with investment managers or in other financial services fields

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice for senior management.

A good start in investment consulting.

    Investment Performance Associate (Current Employee)

ProsRoom for advancement, increased responsibility if you can handle it. Your experience at Cambridge is directly related to what you put into it.

ConsLong hours at times, low pay for the finance industry. There are many very bright people who work here that often leave within a few years because of various reasons, compensation usually being at the top of the list.

Advice to Senior ManagementJob turnover is directly related to compensation and quality of life at work. Things have been done recently to improve this, but there is always room for improvement.

ProsIt really all depends on your department. I enjoy the Large Company, flexibility of managers, great co-workers.

ConsKnowing that some procedures that you see could be improved to be made more efficient, but theres nothing you can do but make the most of it.

Pick this job if your idea of finance is data entry.

    Investment Performance Associate (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

    Pros-Great company.
-Excellent name, especially with Grad schools.
-You can make the job sound better than it is.
-The knowledge that other departments do really cool work.
-Department is great if you love data entry.
-Company pays for CFA exam and most of the cost for materials (if you pass)

Cons-Extraordinarily boring work, and it never really gets a lot more interesting: As an associate you enter data. As a senior associate you oversee four people entering data and perform lots of admin tasks. As an analyst you proof associates' data entry.
-Investment Performance reporting group is a pariah department in the company.
-Internal transfers technically require 13 months, but in reality you'll need 24-30 months to be -looked at.
    -Poor department management.
    -Excessive busywork, lots of admin.
    -Young, inexperienced managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work with the company as a whole. Give the Investment Performance Reporting department some more love, even if it isn't a profit center.

    Good Environment

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYoung, dynamic company. Social events try to promote networking. Company fills niche well. Ballston a location; many bars and restaurants around the area.

ConsCompensation not very competitive with other places. Can feel partitioned from other departments. Office politics an issue. Work can feel monotonous.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend less on needless expenses and more on compensation. Improve consultant relationships with staff. Reduce bureaucracy and promote more open communication.

Great Firm, Good Work, Poor Pay

    Consulting Associate (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

Pros- Opportunities for personal and professional growth
    - Brilliant Consultants/MD's always available to explain rationale or investment philosophy
    - Unrestricted access to clients, managers, etc...

Cons- Base pay is very low
    - Bonus structure doesn't lend itself to inspiring above-and-beyond performance
    - Hours can be grueling at times

Advice to Senior ManagementCambridge Associates is a well-managed firm. CA's work hard and put in the effort to differentiate Cambridge from its competitors. That hard work and aptitude should be rewarded with a pay structure more in line with the industry norms.

    Compensation is horrible

    Senior Consulting Associate (Current Employee)

ProsWork with interesting clients and consulting teams that will push you to learn a lot over the first year. After 12 months you should be able to speak intelligently about most aspects of investing and will have several good stories to share in interviews.

ConsThe pay is embarrassing, especially considering how many 70-80 hour weeks you'll work. Another big problem is that most of the recruiting, training, and consulting associate management is run by your peers so it's more or less a joke. You'll be reviewed by someone who was doing the exact same thing you were 6 months ago, so the opportunity to really get feedback or move up/negotiate doesn't exist. It's also worth noting that CA doesn't believe in firing anyone, so there is a lot dead weight lurking around corner, so beware if you're intelligent and good at your job you'll be rewarded with high priority clients that take more of your time, but you won't be compensated.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire all the secondaries, and hire bright hungry kids as CAs who after 2 years could take the decision to go to B-School or act as a secondary...also, trim the fat.

    Fantastic First Job

    Senior Consulting Associate (Former Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

ProsGreat people, collegiate work environment, very intellectually stimulating, great opportunities post Cambridge, opportunity to meet a lot of the best money managers in the world.

ConsLower than industry pay, top performers not rewarded, lots of dead weight, progress is slow, small bonuses, don't try hard enough to keep their top associates.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry harder to retain top talent in both the associate and consultant levels. I think a lot of talented people end up leaving because the pay and promotion schedule isn't catered to the top performers.
