I have been working at Cambridge Major Laboratories, Inc. full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Cambridge Major Laboratories provides an excellent work environment and resources for employees and consultants to meet their objectives. The recent merger brought new opportunities for change and growth for internal employees and future hires. Everyone is being stretched in a good way to grow and develop into industry experts, which is exciting and very rewarding. The collaboration among teams as a result of the merger is energizing. Time is being spent on creating a leadership and learning culture. The company is experiencing rapid growth, even in a challenging economy.

    Cons

None. The time of growth and expansion is exciting for regular full-time staff, new hires and consultants. Working with existing staff has been great and they welcome the support and expertise consultants have to offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep sharing vision, which allows employees to develop and grow at a rapid pace.

I worked at Cambridge Major Laboratories, Inc. full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Formed strong friendships with most staff. Several of the chemists, analyst, managers & operators are / were very good and deserved much better work environment.
Cost of living relative to other parts of the US is favorable
If you do not mind working long hours for little pay with no real recognition you will have the chance to learn a lot in a couple years. All will be useful as some of is how to execute tasks while the ability to learn what not to do is equally valuable.

    Cons

Unrealistic vision from management with no realistic plan for execution. Management does not value employees. Favoritism is rampant with the "dead weight" some how constantly being protected while stars are only recognized when there are mistakes and not for their successes.
Company has no technology to offer just reactors and people but until they learn to truly put customer service first (internal & external customers) they will / should always be your last choice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the venture capital firm - Start over. A significant number of the old guard are the problem and till they are removed from power and those with fresh ideas can be brought and truly allowed to transform the company CML will always be a third tier US CRO.

I have been working at Cambridge Major Laboratories, Inc. full-time

    Pros

    People

Working at Cambridge Major Laboratories has introduced me to a number of individuals who have fought tenaciously for making a positive change in their environment. These people differentiate themselves from their colleagues through sincere concern for their personal performances and their function within the organization as a whole. These men and women are not satisfied to "just get by" and grind the gears of the broken machine that is CML. Quite the contrary, in fact, these men and women exude a true sense of commitment in their work that extends far beyond mere personal gain and advancement.

These people can be recognized readily. They characterize themselves through their helpfulness, friendliness, and competency. These are the people who really run the company. Without them, CML would crumble. It won't take a new employee long to recognize who these people are and who is just pretending.

    Benefits

The benefits offered by Cambridge Major Laboratories aren't spectacular but they aren't dismal, either. Medical benefits and retirement plans are acceptable.

    Improvement Culture

The list of cons following this section is admittedly much larger and more critical than the pros mentioned here. With that said, I must applaud CML for recognizing this fact and for enacting several changes aimed directly at establishing a culture of continuous improvement. As this review was written in the early stages of the implementation of the necessary changes to make Cambridge Major Laboratories a world class facility for API development and manufacturing, it is unclear as to how effective these changes will be. Change is usually accompanied by some not insignificant amount of pain. It is my sincere hope for the people striving to make a difference in this company that the changes are all for the better and that the current uneasiness is just the growing pain of a company learning what needs to be done.

    Cons

The default text field for the Cons section asks "What are some the challenges of working here?"

    Where to begin...

    Compensation

The compensation offered to salaried employees, at least for my position, is below industry standard. The hourly rates for experienced operations personnel and maintenance technicians are travesties. It's worrisome to think that said personnel could quite easily find more lucrative positions elsewhere.

    Training

Training is a joke at Cambridge Major Laboratories. On the job training isn't well-documented and the official SOP training consists of merely reading (or pretending to have read) a series of dry documents that provide little to no practical detail or substance. Most of the actual training that occurs is a passing down of "Tribal Knowledge" from one experienced individual to another.

The most insidious thing about "Training" at Cambridge Major Laboratories is that it is more often than not used as a bandage for larger systemic issues. "Training" operations to respond to extraordinary, unusual, or unexpected circumstances exonerates project management, development, engineering, and upper management from addressing the 500 LB gorillas rampaging through the room (or production areas, as it were). "They were trained, so the problem has been fixed and it isn't our fault!" is an attitude still very much alive at CML.

    Work-Life Balance

We live in an age that requires exertion above and beyond "standard" ideals that were antiquated years ago. The 40 hour work week and the unmolested weekend are relics of a bygone era. These statements are generalizations that aren't true everywhere, but are practically the expectation at Cambridge Major Laboratories.

It's disheartening and infuriating to see colleagues work through their lunch breaks, check in during the wee hours of the morning, sacrifice their weekends, and work until their families and spouses demand that they stop for a few precious hours on a routine basis just to meet arbitrary company deadlines. Pushing product out the door is priority number 1. Pesky trivialities like spending time with one's family or living life outside the confines of the lab are of little concern to those holding the purse strings.

    Safety

I must begin by stating that the individuals who work in the EHS group at Cambridge Major Laboratories are top notch individuals. Let this not be an indictment of their abilities. Rather, let this be an indictment of the challenges they face on a daily basis.

These challenges include raw material containment, proper ventilation of solvents, failures from improper materials of construction, aging equipment, operator exposure to chemicals, and equipment operation, to name a few.

An assessment of the manufacturing technologies present in the production areas shows just how broken (and dangerous) things can be at CML. The current state of affairs not only affects the profitability of the company but also its ability to run safely.

Frankly, some processes and systems at CML worry me. I find myself even more worried when these processes are evaluated by senior personnel and are deemed insignificant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I will be brief in stating that morale is spiraling down the dirty toilet bowl of depression amongst the people who actually care at Cambridge Major Laboratories. Disillusion them enough and they will leave.

If I may quote the wise Theodor Geisel, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

I have been working at Cambridge Major Laboratories, Inc. full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employees are great to work with, Managers who actually care about their employees and their well being are being let go do to the hostile take over from AAI. AAI is in no position to take on another company, they need to fix their own problems first before they destroy another company

    Cons

Not enough recognition for hard work; Managers/Vice presidents have no clue to what goes on; Work gets piled on and departments remain severely understaffed.Employee morale is at an ultimate low. Promises that "No one is going to lose their job" during the "merger" was all fabrication. more than 10 higher up management have been fired and replaced by AAI employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to recognize hard workers and give them a competitive salary; Correct your problems at AAI before coming to CML and messing up that company.

    Pros

Great people to work with. Of course, this is not in reference to the management whom continually push their employees until they leave the company.

    Cons

Unsafe - safety is not a priority here, results are.
Work hours - tend to have to come in on weekends often.
Advancement - Very little incentive placed in helping people advance their career.

I have been working at Cambridge Major Laboratories, Inc.

    Pros

Employees are major team players and the work experience is a great opportunity for new graduates. Despite the low moral, the employees put forth 110% effort.

    Cons

There is almost no opportunity for advancement due to the size and nature of the company. Technical resources are scarce, and communication is poor across departments. Salary and benefits package are not very competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gain a strategic plan-the company lacks organization in almost every aspect.
