    Excellent second home.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsManagement is great. The organization for the most part is very flexible and understanding. They try to support work life balance.

ConsDepending on your department - there may be many weeks and months of extreme overtime involved.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensation at CMHC is less than market value. Many staff members have professional designations that are required for their positions however these staff members could earn significantly more elsewhere.

ProsSome very nice and knowledgeable people to learn from, tuition reimbursement, government pension

ConsLots of "lifers" who are stuck in their ways, some managers and staff are just clueless

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote younger people too, not just veterans..

Excellent employer, but some policies and business practices could be more current/modern

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

Pros- Salary and benefits exceed those of the public service and many private sector employers.
    - Company places high emphasis on work-life balance, employee satisfaction and professional development.

Cons- Organizational structure is very horizontal, which leads to inefficiency and, in some cases, a lack of clear roles/responsibilities or overlap of duties. There are too many managers.
    - Human resources policies are not applied consistently across the corporation.

    Overall great place to work.

Residential Mortgage Underwriter (Current Employee) Montreal, QC (Canada)

ProsStable job, great pension plan and benefit, competitive compensation for most position. Especially for residential mortgage underwriter. Most manager treats employee well and work condition are generally good. Great employer for work/life balance. When you start, you know right away what your income will be for the next few years, pay scale are very transparent.

ConsSlow pace, only 3 weeks of vacation for the first 8 years, incentive pay and bonus is very small (4-6%). Promotion are generally within the corporation and often there already a preferred candidate for a posting, yet the whole process is complete. Hiring process is not always as fair as it should be. Communication to employee from Senior management is not efficient.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open to change. Reward and recognize employee commitment and hard work. Be more generous in your hospitality or dept budget toward your employee.

    CMHC micromanages.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsYou are interested in housing or construction. Good benefits. Good salaries but you can only start at a maximum 80% of top rate in your posting.

ConsI had to deal with an irrational manager who thought managing is controlling people.
    A very high turnover rate.

Advice to Senior ManagementInterview the people under your managers as a matter of course and not as a one-off.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
