Current Employee – been working at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Pros – Stable job, great pension plan and benefit, competitive compensation for most position. Especially for residential mortgage underwriter. Most manager treats employee well and work condition are generally good. Great employer for work/life balance. When you start, you know right away what your income will be for the next few years, pay scale are very transparent.

Cons – Slow pace, only 3 weeks of vacation for the first 8 years, incentive pay and bonus is very small (4-6%). Promotion are generally within the corporation and often there already a preferred candidate for a posting, yet the whole process is complete. Hiring process is not always as fair as it should be. Communication to employee from Senior management is not efficient.

Advice to Senior Management – Be more open to change. Reward and recognize employee commitment and hard work. Be more generous in your hospitality or dept budget toward your employee.

Pros – You are interested in housing or construction. Good benefits. Good salaries but you can only start at a maximum 80% of top rate in your posting.

Cons – I had to deal with an irrational manager who thought managing is controlling people.
A very high turnover rate.

Advice to Senior Management – Interview the people under your managers as a matter of course and not as a one-off.
