I have been working at Cannonball

    Pros

Cannonball is a small-sized agency with a prestigious portfolio. It's a place where you have the opportunity to prove yourself and not get held back due to "titles" Everyone is very talented; you can learn a lot of valuable knowledge about the ins and outs of the advertising world as well as absorb much of the creativeness around you. It's one of those places where you feel at home with all the good "midwest" attitude.

    Cons

No downsides...as long as you're not afraid to pull a couple of "all-nighters"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Cannonball full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Creative is top notch. Big name clients keep coming back due to the quality of the work. Employees are hardworking but also know how to have fun. No egos. Owners give the employees a lot of room to make big decisions and grow into more responsibility. Pay was great for St. Louis. Always free food. Located in downtown Clayton so there are lots of places to walk to eat and a park nearby if you want to take a run at lunchtime.

    Cons

When you work with a lot of big names, those clients are usually a bit more demanding. Bigger projects, tighter deadlines, etc. The people at CB work hard. Lots of nights and weekends and for some, traveling. Everyone there manages their life around the hours. I wasn't prepared for the additional 20+ hours a week so it didn't work for me.

I worked at Cannonball full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to do some work, great for younger people to learn basics of the business. Big clients and many talented individuals worked there.

    Cons

Extremely unprofessional environment, operated like a frat house, rampant homophobia. This was largely unchecked. Little to no room for advancement regardless of ability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get control of the employees

    I worked at Cannonball

    Pros

    Excellent pay and bonus structure
Cool office - snacks, pool table, well-decorated
    Freebies/travel opportunities
State-of-the-art graphics equipment - kept up to date
    High-profile, national brands as clients
    Fun-sized company, around 50

    Cons

No lateral movement opportunities - few people change job titles or roles (even creative teams rarely change. 1 person make work on the same brand for years)
    HR is not certified
    Little transparency between departments
Different culture between departments (account service has a different experience than digital, than pre-press, than creative, etc.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Suggestion box! Also, check in with employees once and a while and see if they would like to take on different roles & responsibilities. Don't have a 1-dimensional view of people's roles.
