I have been working at Canon USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The name Canon has a lot of weight. For what reason I don't know.

    Cons

I've worked for several companies in my career. Canon is the most poorly run of the bunch. They are living off their name. There is no risk taking here and it's run by a bunch of Japanese that have spend their lives here. No new thinking is allowed. Antiquated HR policies, no reward and recognition. The company will go the way of Kodak, out of business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire Sr. people from the outside to turn this ship around. Listen to lower level employees.

I have been working at Canon USA full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I have a great bunch of people I work with and my manager is top notch. The new building is a nice place to work and offers a refreshing atmosphere.

    Cons

Parking at the new building is a bit challenging if you arrive close to 9 AM. Communication is also an area that needs to be worked on all around.

I have been working at Canon USA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The hours are not very flexible and position does not have a backup person so work piles up in your absence.

    Cons

The work is dull and routine. There is very little variation in day-to-day activities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get engaged with technology plans and projects.

    Pros

New management of Human Resources Department will hopefully improve the way management treats rank and file employees. Long Island headquarters is a beautiful new building.

    Cons

Don't be even a minute late or your supervisor will be calling you into a discussion about it. The human resources business partners (employee relations) track and report everything. Be careful about what you tell them. If you like sitting extremely close to your coworkers you will love the new cubicles in the Melville location. Be sure to see them before you accept a job offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing. A few untrustworthy key people should find work elsewhere.

I have been working at Canon USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Very stable job
Close to home.. if you live in the middle of Long Island

    Cons

I wrote "very stable job" because if you don't do your job you will just be shuffled around the company, not fired
    No room for growth
General attitude of employees is dismal at best
Parking at the new building is a hazard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight for your people. Don't tell them "you are doing a wonderful job, you should get a promotion but unfortunately, Mr. So-and-so has been here longer than you, so.. he get's the promotion."

I worked at Canon USA as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

People - You'll meet great co-workers ( varies by department)
Stability - (pro) People usually stay long term. Good place if you like stability.
Work Security - based on interacting with many employees, it takes a lot of effort to get fired (part of Japanese culture), unless they really don't like you.

    Cons

    Company communication
Stability - (con) hard to move up because people stay within their roles for a long time
    Slow innovation
Conservative about money - ie: paying for your own coffee; meals are not subsidized

    My advice:
Japanese Work Culture - High execs are majority Japanese. Research and learn about the culture if your manager is Japanese or you will be dealing with executives.

I worked at Canon USA for more than 10 years

    Pros

Canon has always been known for innovative products and that trend continues to this day. For the most part, the people are great to work with and most of them stay for many years even thought the pay is not very high.

    Cons

Management has lost touch with what has made Canon great over the years...the PEOPLE! Without great people, Canon is destined to fall short of its goals. Managers tend to micro manage sales people while cutting back on support and resources. This is a recipe for failure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide what kind of organization you want to become and make the changes needed to accomplish it. Give sales the resources needed to succeed.

I have been working at Canon USA full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

New Building........BIG, Big, big and bigger yet!

    Cons

Smaller work stations, cheap looking furniture, horrific color scheme, mausoleum like lobby, crowded, cafeteria to small to accommodate employees, new lunch schedule, food is overpriced, parts of building has leaks, more security guards than Sing Sing, promise of "rest and relaxation" rooms that you had better not be caught using, Fitness Center we haven't seen yet and more rules than Cool Hand Luke had to deal with. CEO is a laughing stock. We are all hoping HR policies and practices will improve under the new leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing......you've provided everything we expected. Keep on lowering our morale!
