I worked at Canon USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Canon USA is a huge company and has a fairly complex structure. If you are interested, there is a lot to learn. For the most part, the people you work with are helpful and nice. And company hours aren't too bad from 9-5.

    Cons

Promotions are rare. Raises and bonuses are small even if you work hard. No flex time. Culture can be a con but you have to remember its not an American company, so you will have to learn to adapt. If you can't adapt, then it'll be a huge con for you.

I worked at Canon USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits and stable employment

    Cons

Lack of training and communication. Unless you're a Japanese Expat you will not get far within the company. If you are a woman you have even less chance then that.

    Advice to Management

There is a lack of positive reinforcement and employees feel discouraged much of the time. One has to be at Canon for 15-20 years to reach Senior Management positions. Even then more opportunities are given to MEN then to WOMEN (with same qualifications). Since the Japanese culture believes a woman wont devote her time to a job once married and running a home, not much time is invested in job training and opportunities given to women who want to grow within the company. The constant shift of management and department reorganization is appalling. You could work for three different managers in one year, each having their own rules and regulations. A Japanese Expat will be promoted within 1-2 years of arrival, without speaking English and still learning the job, an American will wait for that same promotion for 4-5 years at least (these are lower level promotions not Senior promotions). Its unfortunate and disappointing that I invested so much time into this company.

I worked at Canon USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The reputation of this company is outstanding, and it can open doors. They invest considerably in R & D, and aim to dominate with the number one or two product position in each market they operate in.

    Cons

They seem to be lacking some of the technical depth of some other Japanese companies working in the U.S. They had a big misstep when they lost the Ikon business to Ricoh.

  11. Frustrating working in the retail channels.

I worked at Canon USA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good company, nice benefits, reasonable pay for work and travel. Great products, with exposure to multiple industries. There are some great people who are very compassionate, that work at this company.

    Cons

HQ cuts positions and then sees how that outcome affects the current business model. HQ is completely out of touch with the retail marketplace. Don't expect acceptance of creative, aggressive pricing. There are managers at HQ that have control of the business that have never sold anything, so the perspective is very narrow and limited.

    Advice to Management

Retail business creates key accounts with leverage and has a positive multiplier affect on the dealer channel business. A cooperative, cohesive business model with the company subsidiary would increase your sales success.
