Long-term employee, who has seen many changes within the organization. Some positive and some challenging.

I have been working at Capital Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company generally strives to maintain high levels of employee satisfaction with competitive salaries, amazing benefits and a focus on career growth and development. The overall culture is respectful and supportive. The work is very challenging and interesting, which can mostly be attributed to the ongoing evolution of the financial industry.

    Cons

There have been many recent changes in leadership within the organization. Many associates have had several managers within a short time-frame, making it challenging to build strong working relationships. We've also added quite a few more layers of management adding to the number of stakeholders who are part of the decision making process. More opinions have been leading to longer decision making and political jockeying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best leaders are the ones who know the people they are leading, and in turn they know you and your vision for the organization.

I have been working at Capital Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Very little political back-stabbing.
Great compensation compared to its competitors
    Great learning tools available
    Good work-life balance
    Relaxed environment

    Cons

Decision-making is concentrated at the top

Very little upward mobility--IT is bringing outside folks, mostly from Accenture as managers. Since most of the new managers have not gone through a full life-cycle with support, it leads to unrealistic expectations. Further, most of the accenture folks come with an attitude built-in: they are arrogant to a 't' and have no problem showing it. It takes them two years to mellow and get out of that mode.

Don't expect "personal growth." Not there, won't be there for at least the next 5 years.

I have been working at Capital Group as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

CG as a company is amazing.
    Great Campus.
    Money is decent.
Get to work on multiple platforms at the same time.

    Cons

    Not credit driven
    Intensive politics
    Finger pointer wins
All work will be dumped on you so Full timers roam around free.
    Micro management at its best.
    Unprofessional behavior.
Teaming up against one person one by one.
Always discussing people on their back.
The goal is "I" should rule and the work is not the focus.
No respect for team mates and very disrespectful environment. Screaming and shouting is normal, use of abusive language..!!

    Not worth it..!!!!

I have been working at Capital Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Time off is great, work life balance.
    Can leave early
Nice place to eat, plenty of budget for the department.
Great Senior Manager and director makes things go smooth

    Cons

Outsourcing is good for the bottom line.
I'd like to have had a chance to be considered for certain duties before its outsourced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great company, kind of in need of some new leadership up top. I'd like to see more associate positions and fewer lay offs and contractors replacing associates.

I worked at Capital Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People really stick to the core values of the firm. Every discussion revolves around ensuring that shareholders are served well. The integrity of CG associates is excellent, and there is always an effort to ensure that project leaders engage across functions to make the best decisions possible. The company has been around for 80 years, and has earned its reputation as an upstanding long-term investment firm.

    Cons

Conservatism and team-focused efforts have a dark side: they keep folks from getting things done. I found management often unable to make a decision out of fear that they had somehow not gotten buy-in from every potential party. The 80/20 rule doesn't exist there--you have to run decisions and potential actions by every single person who might be affected. Risk tolerance is zero, which hampers the ability to move quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower associates to make decisions and have responsibility/accountability. Lots of smart folks lack opportunities at CG because management is too tied up in details to pay attention and help them develop.

I have been working at Capital Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice people, retirement benefit, great physical environment, strong ethics.

    Cons

In some departments, career growth is stagnant, despite attempts to make it appear differently (trainings and education assistance).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead your people, not yourselves. Leave the egos out of meetings so that discussion is more relevant and concise. Everyone is busy, let's minimize associates hearing themselves talk and maximize efficiency. Analysis paralysis = yes. Collaboration to a fault = yes.
