    10 Year Business Analysis

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsBest Place to work in the UK award 2013, its all about the people, great flexibility

ConsDemocratic decision making process makes it a very slow place to make things happen - and any of 20 people can make getting something done difficult

The worst ever performance review system and a massive amount of politics.

Solutions Architect (Former Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsModern facilities, clean and well kept.

ConsNearly everything after the initial 3 month period

Advice to Senior ManagementI think the management should do away with the cross calibration performance review system. The employee is not allowed to represent their own performance in this system, so if their manager is weak at articulating what they have done they will ultimately suffer.
Apart from this the performance review culture in fact encourages employees to come up with non-sense idea’s which waste money such as decorating rooms as jungles and ski resorts. So in affect what you have is a culture of bad ideas being rewarded, you can easily see this by the lack of technological competition offered on the capital one website as compared to their competitors.
On the whole a lot of good ideas which could potentially benefit the business are shelved because of the risk averse culture which totally goes against the "dare to be the best" internal slogan.
There seems to be a really unhealthy focus on doing things that aren't actually related to your role. This goes under the pretence that employees have to go the extra mile outside of their role even if that extra mile has nothing to do with benefiting the business itself, which in itself is bizarre.
The vast majority of the management have held high roles for a number of years whilst the many at low levels are ushered along with concepts that waste their time and do not help them in their day to day work.
You will find a lot of employees who have stayed with Capital One since leaving university and the ones that come from other businesses and try and share their concepts and ideas are usually frowned upon for not doing things in the “Capital One Way”.
There is a lot of talk of work life balance but I didn't experience a fair balance the work life balance seems to be for the folks that have worked at Capital One for years and have managed to get flexi weeks. Everyone else has to put up and shut up.
Overall I think the general feeling in the place is that this was a once great company to work for when first setup in the UK but things have changed.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Fun, lively working atmosphere with varied job roles

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsGreat people to work with, all intelligent and deserve to be there.
Shorter working hours compared to most jobs
Job roles vary from borderline pure marketing to statistical quant type job.
Relaxed working atmosphere in open plan office. Often social events and 'fun days'.
Sometimes large project work, other times quick business cases.
    Promotions done merit based
    Good pay for location

ConsVery little work interaction with people in associate level job. May only have 1 or 2 meetings a week and they mainly will be with direct manager.
Feel like sometimes you can't have as large an impact as you might want until you get to manager level (2 promotions up)

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat environment, great people, interesting job.

    Once great now grim

Technical Architect (Former Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

Prosfrom what I know know of the company there do not appear to any left.
    pay & training opportunities

Conscompany only interested in profits and share price
pay lip service to Associates and their welfare
performance management actually produces the opposite effect

Advice to Senior Managementoutsourcing and Far East call centres may appear profitable but in the long term they are killing a once great company

Great company, but can become a bit suffocating. And a young company.

Project Manager (Former Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsA lot of oppotunities and a young feeling company. I got to work in France, USA and Madrid in my role. Some peopel there are very good and there is a collective energy in the office which makes working there a pleasure.

There is a lot of fun in the office with a fun budget where every quarter you get a day out paid for by the company (bowling / meal / day out doing something etc)

ConsObsessed by soft skills, sometimes forgetting about the core work itelsf. Also some management were promoted, put in management of people positions who were very poor people skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to be less focused on peoples soft skills - giving feedback etc and more focused on the actual job

its cool for a while but step back and think it it right for ME

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

Prosthe people, they really are a special group and put together they create something special, work becomes fun in both an intellectually stimulating way and also in a way where its ok to have a bit of banter with a few friends

Consif you dont fit the image they have of what you need to be they will keep you hanging, they are a bit closed minded as to what a successful person should be and have definately swung too far one way, it will all balance out though

Advice to Senior Managementmore all rounders in the company would help you to see beyond just numbers and statistics

Great Realxed environment to work in.

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsCapital one has a very complete and relax work environment. It is competetive and at the same time provides great opportunites to succeed. The learning curve is step and you get to do a lot of value addition right from when you start work at Cap one.

ConsThe laid back environment can get to you at times and it feels like things ae moving real slow. Also if are looking for a faster carrer progression it is better to look into investment banking or something on the wall street. Also capital one locations are not great and hence it can be a pain at times.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone
