I have been working at Capital One

    Pros

*pay is good, better than other banks
    *PTO is also good
    *Incentives are good
*Most of the co-workers are good people
*Capital-one in this area are not as busy as others

    Cons

*The GAIN is ridiculous, management is never satisfied
*They make you investigate customers in order to make referrals to the bankers (They call it discover hidden needs) have to ask customers where they work, and what plans they have
    (Hate that)
*When the bank gets mystery shoppers and you fail to get a 100% they make sure you feel everyone hates you
*Everyone feels they have the right to tell you what to do
*one day they tell you, you are a great employee, and the next you are the worst
*If one day you have referrals, you're the best, but when
you don' t have any they throw it in you're face, and make you feel unproductive
*Co-workers are great, when you do what they want you to do, when you dont they talk about you until they get tired, and start being great again
*Most of them say that they are professionals, but its not what you see in them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

some management leaders are good at what they do, but others are so lost, makes me wonder what they saw in them............

    I worked at Capital One

    Pros

Benefits are okay. Take advantage of tuition reimbursement there. Most of the intelligent people there do. Other standard benefits.

    Cons

It was all roses to start, but I quickly learned plenty of obstacles had to be hurdled daily to get my job done. Had to seek out information, seek out the right people with said information, get approvals within and outside my department, even outside the state, for small things. Those in mid and upper management seem to be clueless and out of touch. As long as the company is making progress, damn the stock prices. My stock there was originally $80/share, but fell to $40 over five years.
They often seek barely warm bodies with a few active brain cells for management positions and these people are ill equipped. Many of the managers could use communication skills and human communication 101 lessons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people fair or you will one day read about it in Fortune or The Wall Street Journal. So many people have been walked out the door without regard to job performance, years in service, family needs, etc. Fairbanks and his croonies are going to run this bank into the ground. I sold every share of company stock, divested all of my accounts there and would recommend the same for anyone.
And management, treat your people with respect or that will come back to haunt you one day.

I have been working at Capital One

    Pros

PTO(timeoff) is tremendous, Great corporate culture, good pay in comparison with other banks. Very strategic with growing.

    Cons

Management is promoted by favorites. Management also knows nothing of how to manage the branches effectively. The new GAIN model is ridiculous and a waste of time and money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Throw out the GAIN and hire some real managers. Keep up the good work with Benefits and growth.

    I worked at Capital One

    Pros

    Above average pay
    Good training opportunities

    Cons

    Little guidance from management
Very poor work-life balance in most cases
Group think mentality - you are either with them or against them, and if you want to go anywhere you better be with them!
One of the most stressful places I've ever worked

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to look outside Capital One for other ways to do things.

Former Employee - Risk Analyst in Houston, TX
Former Employee - Risk Analyst in Houston, TX

    I worked at Capital One

    Pros

Some of the best reasons were the benifits. Full health, vision and dental coverage. Also the 401k plan is one of the best out there. Also there is some profit sharing so long as you have a 401k plan you can participate. This will come as a bonus to the 401k plan (only) and ranges around $1500/yr

    Cons

Some of the cons there were they don't generally promote the best candidate for the job. They tend to promote from a pool of people they know (or like) regardless if they have done the job. Sometimes it's just a willingness to work riduculous hours 60-80+ for any manager-level. Those that are hourly will not have that many OT opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company says it wants feedback from employees. Many people are more concerned about their jobs and will hesitate to say anything negative about their work environment for fear of reprisal. Although this may not be common at corporate HQ, it certainly is in the outlying divisions. I have heard managers ask, "who posted X comment?" during a 'anonymous' survey when it was not flattering to that individual. If Capital One wants true and honest feedback, they need to reign in this kind of behaviour so that there is no doubt to those inside the company that this behaviour will not be tolerated.
