Great place to work if you fit into the culture

    Business Analyst (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

    ProsVery fair compensation
    Good benefits
    Excellent campus in Richmond
Tools are very effective such as wireless internet access
    Very intelligent and professional employees

ConsPerformance Management process encourages competition, not cooperation.
Company culture is very specific - conservative, more formal interaction with team members.
If your approach is "get it done and tell it like it is", you may feel out of place at this company.

Your experience depends on which campus you work at.

    Business Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

    ProsBenefits, cafeterias, flexible work areas.

ConsLOUD (especially if you are at West Creek), difficulty parking (I was reluctant to make doctor appointments in the morning because I knew parking would be difficult if I arrived after 8:30). Also at West Creek, you have to get there early to make sure you have a desk to sit at. Otherwise, you may have to sit in the cafeteria. West Creek is chaos. Knolls is nice, but the floors shake constantly as if there is a permanent earthquake. East Shore is the place to be.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe one thing a person should not have to worry about when going to work is having a place to sit.

Decent and still growing, but confining

    Sp Prod Representative (Current Employee)
    Glen Allen, VA

ProsThe company offers outstanding benefits from a 401k with a match up to 6% along with 160 hours of paid time off. The campus life and culture within Capital One is amazing, you can and will find a wide array of people.

ConsThere is not any advancement opportunities once you get into a department. The pay for the work that you would do is very mediocre and not really worth it.

    Dysfunctional Culture for Software Engineers

    IT Director (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

Pros- good total comp for junior engineers/developers
    - adopting Agile/SAFe/ART
    - stable balance sheet, forward business prospects
    - nice campus & public facilities
    - 401k plan

Cons- forced ranking per performance management
    - results are not rewarded ... "competencies" are valued more than the actual work product
    - senior leadership has very little engineering background or IT delivery experience
    - culture is counter-productive to delivery

Advice to Senior Management- reward delivery and results
    - senior up with some engineers and experienced software delivery leadership
    - drop forced rankings ... your good senior people are going to leave
    - get out of meetings and engage

    Potential Opportunity for Contractors

    Senior Brand Manager (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsThe culture is great and processes are set up to allow entrepreneurial thought at any level. They are open to working from home (though this has recently been less true for contractors) and many contractors have successfully transitioned to permanent, full-time employees.

ConsContractors are not always treated well. There is some legal consideration with making a difference, but some of the behaviors are mean-spirited and unnecessary. I heard a story from one contractor whose manager baked cupcakes and brought them from home, but wouldn't let the contractors have any. This type of childish behavior is more common than you might think.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider eliminating the contractor program. Contractors work just as hard as full-time employees, but are treated as second class citizens and take a lot of tribal knowledge with them when they leave after their two-year stints.

    A good company

    Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsThe company offers competitive salaries and bonuses, a stock purchase program, and a vast number of training opportunities. Another plus is relatively easy to move within the company into different groups and jobs.

ConsI feel like that while management outwardly encourages input from their subordinates, it is rarely embraced and in the end you end up just doing what you are told.

great training and really values its employees

    Business Manager (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

Prosquantitative, analytical, good work-life balance, values its employees, good training, good opportunities for internal mobility. not like a "bank"

Consnot as much dynamism and as many promotions as the old days. Many acquisitions threaten whether the good culture can be sustained.

Great place to start a career

    Business Analyst (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsI only worked at capital one for about year, but felt that I gained valuable experience in analytics that I've been able to apply in future roles.

The culture is also great for analytically-minded folk. Ideas are argued based on their merits, and you can have a big impact as a junior analyst if you're good enough.

ConsCapital One makes basically all of their money off tricking poor people into using products they can't afford. They're better than they were (after some big settlements with the federal government) but in most areas of the company you'll need to be comfortable with the fact that you're the type of banker people protest.

Advice to Senior ManagementExpand operations in the bay area and Seattle.
