Excellent place to start your career with some of the best benefits you will get from a private sector employer.

    Pros

great benefits and great management. Have experienced nothing but great advice, great leadership and advice. Co-workers are very friendly and easy to get along with. sometimes things get a little patchy close to the end of the month but other then that great stuff. the training is very comprehensive and thorough unlike many other companies i have worked with in the past it seems that many companies do not believe in thorough training when they need to focus on it

    Cons

Not much bad to say here great company.

    Pros

Everyone I work with is really friendly and the management i work under does not micromange, plus they go out of their way to greet you and hold a quick conversation

    Cons

the sales people in the presidents club can be pushy and annoying at times, the hardest department inventory doesn't get paid enough for what they do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if the employees were payed more, sales and production would dramatically increase..

    Pros

Business Office - fun team-builders, opportunities for community service, ok training (you learn better by completing task rather than reading your handbook). Exciting Auctions.

    Cons

As a BOA, you are not salaried and make the least hourly compared to the other departments. You do not get paid for the amount of work you have to do. Usually understaffed so ones workload increases. When you are asked to travel to another store, receiving your money back takes too long for the trouble, so I would encourage you to decline unless they offer you to drive a company car.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Learn what leadership is. PLEASE.

I worked at CarMax full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Clean , modern , climate controlled facilities . Good wage and benefits . CarMax works hard to promote a positive message . If you can tolerate the ever changing policy requirements and corporate culture that is required to perform at the levels expected , it can be a positive place to work .

    Cons

Corporate culture has gotten quite overwhelming . Management can be poorly trained and lack focus . Although open door policies and the encouragement to reach out to management for assistance is encouraged , I personally found little assistance when it was needed most . If you work for CarMax I would recommend having a back up plan in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked with very good managers , average managers and poor managers . Luck of the draw I guess . My advise to the management is to remember that they may hold power over someones hopes and dreams , that their actions can greatly affect the outcome of peoples lives both positively or negatively . This should be recognized and viewed as a serious responsibility .

I worked at CarMax full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Continuous training. Fair work/life balance. Can make a decent paycheck if you are on your game all the time and work your days off..

    Cons

Micro management Micro management Micro management. Corporate treats employees as numbers only not as people. Corporate blind to employee abilities only sees policies and rules. FAVORITISM! Corporate bias to promotions, if management doesn't like you, you will not get advancement regardless of performance....period. Sales personnel received 1 pay increase in 15 years! Yet the CEO takes a $2 MILLION DOLLAR PAY INCREASE AND HUGE BONUS EACH YEAR!!! Corporate says to sales staff "if you want a pay increase sell another car!" Sales staff considered and treated with "dime a dozen" mentality. $160 per car commission was GREAT...in 1985!!! Management has no interest in assisting you in closing a deal, too lazy. They would rather sit behind a desk and check email/play games on their phones instead of coming out on the floor to help close a deal! Management out of touch with the sales floor due to lack of involvement. Most LGM's have less than 6 months of sales experience but consider themselves experts. Oh did I mention MICRO MANAGEMENT?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes! $10 BILLION DOLLAR A YEAR COMPANY should take care of the people that make that $10 BILLION DOLLARS a year for you!!! LGM's listen to your senior sales people! They know more about what is happening on your sales floor than you could possibly know. Sales managers at least act like you know something about selling a car. Get off your phones and get involved with your sales people---help them close a deal at least once in a while and encourage them to come to you before the customer walks! Sometimes just a different voice can close a deal! This would be sales management 101!

I worked at CarMax full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Clean place to work with great benefits.

    Cons

Leadership is inconsistent from store to store and even within a store. More value is placed on verbal responses than standard of work. Senior managers are dishonest and considered credible because of their tenure. They take credit for your ideas and accomplishments and reprimand aggressively for minor infractions.
