I worked at Cardno full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Variety of jobs, option to travel, good people.

    Cons

Beware the office culture if you are a field scientist (biologist/archaeologist) Office culture is out of touch with field workers and their needs. Even if on an individual level they do their best to accommodate you while in the field, the guidelines for expense reimbursement and inconsistencies in what is reimburseable are quite a hassle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify your expense reporting and provide opportunities for junior level employees to learn and grow. Trust us. We are capable of more than you give us credit for. Pay should increase/decrease with performance reviews. Unfortunately, this is not the case,

I have been working at Cardno full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Large corporation that managed to weather the economic storm of 2008 - present. Strong suite of services (some are commendable).

    Cons

May be a good company to work for - in about five years. This is a word of warning to potential employees: Let the dust settle before you risk working for a company that's still trying to find its north star. Top management talks a good talk, but it becomes clear after the gloss fades that their lofty goals are based on dollars in their back pockets, with no anticipated trickle-down effect to the workers. Vertical accountability with no teamwork makes for a difficult work environment. If you need professional mentoring, look elsewhere. It's every man/woman for him/herself right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We see potential "lifetime" career-minded employees at all levels jumping ship. Your growth goals are impressive, getting there with your current employees would be much more impressive. Blaming your missed company-wide goals on the economic environmental has become a lame (worn-out) excuse. Blaming it on the reduction of an environmental-response (i.e. short term) project makes you appear short-sighted. Blaming it on the weather makes you appear that you didn't know how to "save for a rainy day."

I have been working at Cardno full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Time off package and salaries seem to be above average. Employees are encouraged to work on their own.
Education is a must...they are interested in top talent. Flexible office hours and relaxed office attire.

    Cons

Very unorganized different divisions have different procedures. Management practices favoritism. HR is useless in the effort of reporting management issues. It's every employee for themselves there is very little team work and they don't seem to want to change. Employees are very territorial. Management does not communicate well, especially individually. This company has a lot of staff unhappy and they have no one to turn to. You can not bring issues up for fear of losing your job. This s a male dominated company that has a long way to go to change. Lots of pressure to perform on your own the Business development staff is very weak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your employees, let them be honest. The work needs to be distributed evenly and fairly. Managers need to be better trained. The company needs to work harder at recognizing their female talent.

I worked at Cardno full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Most people are open, honest and a joy to work with. Company has the connections to provide a wide variety of professional opportunities.

    Cons

Some people intentionally block your success as they are unsure of their own security within the company. As a result very talented people wind up leaving instead of fighting the "uphill" battle trying to succeed as a team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose your managers and leaders more wisely.

I have been working at Cardno part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

very flexible, Co-workers are great to work with, office environment is great. Willing to spend money on new equipment, which cuts down on field work time.

    Cons

The pay is awful, never recognized for hard work. After being bought out a lot of higher management is jumping ship.

I have been working at Cardno

    Pros

Tremendous amount of potential that is not actualized. Opportunity to work with scientists from a variety of fields. Fast paced (and unchecked) growth leaves opportunities for promotion. Cardno is a conglomerate of many acquisitions which operate as separate businesses, of which ENTRIX is one. This business model could allow for some excellent collaboration with professionals in a variety of different fields, if it was encouraged. My office has great staff and I wish the same could be said for top level managers. The quality of your experience with Cardno ENTRIX varies greatly depending upon which business unit/upper management team you are working with. Some of these individuals were great managers but....

    Cons

Remote office management from unrelated regions. Upper management has micromanaged projects out of project managers hands and this hurts client relationships and makes project management extremely stressful, sometimes taxing professional reputations as a result. Large scale and poorly thought out knee-jerk layoffs often land ENTRIX understaffed in the very areas in which they need to be expanding growth. This has been achieved in an effort to preserve the jobs of a certain good old boy network of senior members in less economically productive areas. It contributes to an air of instability and expendability that is causing voluntary resignations across the board and detracting from the company's economic viability as a whole.

    Pros

My office was filled with great people. Wish the same could be said for Corporate folks.

    Cons

No support. In some ways you are set up to fail. Benefits are horrid. Senior management is pathetic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many managers. There needs to be a corporate housecleaning of senior staff, VPs, and principals.

I have been working at Cardno full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers, interesting projects. Love the culture in my particular office. Relaxed atmosphere and flexible hours when needed are GREATLY appreciated!! The company has previously been very understanding of employee work-life balance needs which is particularly important for people with small children. By far, this is the best aspect of the company. Since being acquired by Cardno, these pros have remained, but we'll see if they are changed as the merger finalizes. The benefits package is fairly standard but pretty good, in my opinion. Salaries are so-so.

    Cons

Large, aggressive company that is focused on purchasing and merging rather than on retaining current employees. Short-sighted upper management uses performance metrics that are not based in reality to make snap decisions about lay-offs then find later that they've laid off people they need for projects that were already on the horizon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hiring freezes and salary freezes are hard to understand from the worker-bee point of view, particularly when the company continues seeking and acquiring smaller companies. A year and a half of sporadic lay-offs is demoralizing and does not result in loyalty. Try to keep the best parts of the companies you're acquiring - like the excellent work-life balance that ENTRIX employees have enjoyed.
