I have been working at Cardno full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great group of people to work with and work for. The company is large so there's lots of room to move around or upward if you're hard working. It's an international company which allows for transfers to other parts of the world if that interests you. Benefits are average.

    Cons

As a consulting company most jobs require travel. Some projects are 1-2 years long which can require A LOT of time on the road. For some folks this is a positive and it was for me as well in the beginning but it can be draining after several years. The company (my sector) is very top heavy and the folks at the top of paid well but the lower and mid level employees are not. Moving into leadership roles can also be a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Show appreciation to your younger and mid level staff. Take the time to recognize those with potential and invest in them through their salary, training, and encouragement. Doing these things will likely result in very loyal employees who appreciate and respect the culture you are trying to maintain.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule Agile management Responsive IT department

    Cons

Sole work focus is to bill hours; no time allocated to standardizing work processes or developing a data management practice. You will let go if client does not renew its service contract and you cannot attach yourself to a project with billable hours. Project teams are typically spread across multiple time zones, which complicates communication and management if the project manager does not have tight control on the project.

    Advice to Management

Drop the hokey on-line training courses. Do I really need to watch the same canned PPT presentations one a year? Think beyond next quarter's results and think more about growing a business. After a 5 year data management contract with BP, what do you have to show for it? Treat your employees like valued assets rather than disposable commodities.

I have been working at Cardno full-time

    Pros

Cardno embraces new technologies and they provide freedom to innovate on projects.

    Cons

There is some volatility regarding the overall backlog which jeopardizes job security.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on people as the number one growth strategy.

    Pros

You can learn a lot depending on what office you work at, but you won't earn near as much as you learn. The only other pro is depending on your department, your position, or what time of year it is there can be an okay work life balance.

    Cons

They constantly cut your legs off with knee jerk reaction management decisions based on short sided economics and then tell you to go run a marathon. If you are still able to produce and keep clients happy after all of that, then you still don't get anything in return. Sounds like they " value their #1 assets" to me. I predict that the various bits and pieces of Cardno that don't make the expected billing rates and can't just flip a switch and start charging more money will eventually be sold off to some other company.

    Advice to Management

Upper management talks a good game but doesn't even come close to delivering. Eventually you are going to have to run a business like is should be run instead of how you think it should based on the share price. Take a good long hard look at the management structure and tighten the belt in that area instead of letting go of administrative staff that is necessary and vital to the operation. 10 admins equals 1 of the upper manager club that keeps getting bigger.

    Pros

VERY relaxed atmosphere, freedom to do what you want. Nice building/work office facilities

    Cons

VERY political and corrupt. Offer no career development and no incentives to do better. Offer no professional development and relaxed atmosphere is TOO relaxed creating no accountability or follow-up. Theres no structure at all-

    Advice to Management

Develop a better business plan, listen to your employees, no favoritism, better management

I have been working at Cardno (More than 8 years)

    Pros

generally a laid back office setting, good balance of home/work life

    Cons

no structure for promotion, they make it up as you go. generally pay under industry standards. Little to no respect from peers when you come in at entry level even if you have been with the company for many years. small bonuses and raises even if your group does well

    Advice to Management

Be a manager not a friend. Handle business as necessary. Don't talk about employees behind their backs to their co-workers.

I worked at Cardno full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My Branch had generally amazing good quality people to work with, generally the ones not pulling their weight were let go.

    Cons

Went years without a review, got the feeling of being taken advantage of. One individual held back the enormous potential of the branch: all the stereotypes being real: workaholic, taking credit for other's work, difficult to approach, taking advantage of people when possible, communication difficult

    Advice to Management

Management has changed at the branch I worked so may be different. Mandatory reviews may improve things, I recommend reviews every 6 mos instead of every year.

    Pros

    Good benefits and OK salary.

    Cons

Middle management are schoolyard bullies who do not communicate until something is wrong. If you are looking for a positive atmosphere with pleasant management then look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Work on your own utilization and cut some of the layers of management. Get some training on how to manage without coercion.

I worked at Cardno full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The scientists that they employ are professionals of the highest caliber. You learn SO MUCH just being within their proximity, and by interacting with them on a daily basis.

    Cons

Occasionally, the ramp-up process can lag behind, as can securing appropriate network and data access credentials. And for non-scientific personnel, there isn't a formal "training" program to supplement any of the critical disciplines.

    Advice to Management

Recruit as much project work as possible to keep employees engaged. And commit to refreshing hardware and peripherals on a more aggressive schedule to keep people working with current tools.
