    How a hospice should NOT be run.

    I worked at Care Alternatives Hospice full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Local, clinical staff (RN's, social workers, chaplains, HHA's, even allied therapies including music therapy) are competent and mostly a joy to work with.

    Cons

    Leadership - from national administrative leadership to local administration - seems to be primarily out to maintain their own sense of importance. There is little actual empowering and supporting of the field staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Make use of clinical staff presently working in the field as legitimate advisors in how operations might be improved and maintained. Learn bottom-to-top management and let it inform and influence decisions and leadership styles.

    I have been working at Care Alternatives Hospice (more than an year)

    Pros

    Field staff. Always trying to find quick fixes for lack of resources. Most field staff very knowledgeable.

    Cons

    Management. Puts new meaning to the words 'micro manager'. Will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat. Main HQ won't give people what they need, just lecture about how you shouldn't need it. Rude and condescending to staff. And patients, you're going to get the bare minimum to save money. So be ready.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You can't expect to have 'best in class' service, when you not only treat employees so poorly, you treat families with the bare minimum as well.
