I have been working at CareFlite

    Pros

Careflite cares about their employees and is one of the highest paid EMS in Dallas. Lots of overtime openings with time and a half.

    Cons

Hard to move to a different shift at least for me. Some of the trucks are old and need to be out of service. Be prepared to answer to question, "oh are you on a helicopter" no those are flight nurses and bad A paramedics and they deserve mad respect.

    Advice to Management

Management is actually pretty good. I would like to move to a different shift but it is so hard because all the employees who have seniority cannot settle on a truck. Seniority should rotate. Once someone picks a shift they should go to the bottom of seniority.

    Pros

Immediate Supervisors care about their employees, good opportunities for overtime, New vehicles and equipment, good continuing education program with access to card classes

    Cons

Upper management does not value employees, pay system restructured, shifts change too regularly, logistics is a nightmare for crews, on-call schedule was a nightmare, company plays favorites, company does not seem to put family first, no camaraderie.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, don't bite off more than you can chew, help your employees with career progression, better benefits, don't burn out your good people, fix radio communication problems, listen to reason.

    Pros

Fun Flying Job, Work with interesting people, good maintenance of older aircraft, Work week on/ week off schedule.

    Cons

Minimal Flight Time, Upper management out of touch with flight crews, employee morale low, lots of complaining from rank and file.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time listening to needs of flight crews. Improve pay scale and employee benefits. Promote newer employees based on merit, not longevity.

    Pros

You hardly see them and when you do its brief.

    Cons

Upper management does not care about employees, and middle management are all yes men with no backbone.

    Pros

One of the better paying companies in DFW for EMS that is not associated with Fire. Regular schedules make it easy to build a life around the job. Overtime is often available. The brand "CareFlite" gives you a certain level of respect in the DFW area. Be prepared to be asked constantly if you fly though.

    Cons

Worst health insurance I've ever heard of. Basically the insurance will pay 100% after you meet your $3000 deductible; that's the great part. The bad part about the insurance is that it will not cover anything before the $3000 deductible. So you are paying $160 a month as a young adult male and the insurance will not pay any portion of an office visit nor will it help with prescriptions. You are better off saving the $160 a month and paying out of pocket for medical expenses. When hired they will tell you that putting you on a 24 hour shift or the location you want to be is no problem but it does not ever seem to work that way. If you want a 24 hour shift you will more than likely be put on a day truck and then work your way up to a 24 hour shift which can take some time. If you want to work 911 in Johnson County, you will probably get sent to work on a Stephenville transfer truck first and then have to work your way to Johnson County. The company does not work with school schedules. If you plan to go to medic school or some other kind of school you will have to try and fill your shift if school falls on that day. If you are in school it would be best to not mention that in the interview. Not so much a con but a warning: When first hired try not to have any plans set in stone. Orientation is a couple weeks long. After that you have to get cleared at the location you plan to work which takes a while and you don't have control of your training schedule. Can't take PTO for the first year of employment. You may or may not be allowed to take the day off unpaid, depends on the supervisor. This info is not designed to scare anyone off. CareFlite is a stable company to work for and one of the better EMS companies in the DFW area. I simply believe it is better to get all the facts first.

    Advice to Management

Offer better health insurance. Work with school schedules. Allow PTO usage before the first year. Be more upfront about placement.

    Pros

Great co-workers, good team environment during training.

    Cons

Leadership is missing from the top down. The lower on the ladder the worse you are treated.

    Advice to Management

Get certified and ride the trucks, helicopters and planes. Offices are great but see what you are putting your staff through, Stop making promises you know you will not keep. Stop blowing all the smoke!!!

    Pros

Working at CareFlite provides for good experience in the EMS field, most 911 and event stand by services are fun.

    Cons

Station are in bad shape. Sprinter Ambulances do not work well for ground EMS crews.

    Advice to Management

Less managers would be a plus, there are too many supervisors.
