I worked at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, reasonable commute, easily accessible to some okay(not great or outstanding) food places.

    Cons

Company Values - nothing good other than bottom line & to share holders. Bill Jews had a great vision, but that no longer exists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Total shakedown to rid the company of the sweat shop mentality, while all the deadwood goes out to 2 hour lunches & gets manicures & shops online while others break their backs! You REALLY need to look at HR!!!!

I worked at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Benefits were pretty good. There company had many initiatives to improve how business got done but was not as good at implementing these changes. The insurance overview training was quite good.

    Cons

Weak implementation of good ideas. Management was overly distracted by office politics, Reorganizations and layoffs were the order of the day. More than half of the people had multiple changes in jobs or supervisors within CareFirst during the previous 1-1/2 years. Job security was constantly on the mind of the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the political games and favoritism. With commitment to improve and the diligence to follow through, the company has the potential to become a very good employer.

I have been working at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Job security. Too much work. Never lacking for things to work on.

    Cons

Too much work at times. Although I prioritze very well, still too much work. I do the work of 4 people but that's okay, I feel valued for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help associates climb the corporate ladder. Really sit down with them and advise them on what they need to do in order to get a leg up. And follow through--postponements do not count.

    Pros

The pay is not bad and benefits are good

    Cons

Senior Management has turf wars constantly and everything is too political here. Expect to work 60 hours+ as a Manager.

I worked at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    *Location
    *Benefits (not to include compensation)
*As a Health Care provider they are great with many products to choose from for the general public and companies.

    Cons

*Click mentality reminiscent of High School. If you are in the click you are golden, if not your days are numbered.
*No clear advancement or succession planning, moving target to meet arbitrary set goals by management . Annual Review Process is useless. Again, you will go far & be well compensated if you fit in the click.
*Much dead weight remains and talented people are forced out.
*Age, Gender and Racial discrimination beyond belief.
*Antiquated and outdated systems and tools to perform overall job functions/requirements.
*Large volume of employees so fearful of loosing their job no matter how hard they try to meet the ambiguous expectations. This adds to the feeling of a hostile work environment and not a collaborative team effort working for the same company and purpose.
*HR-Not there to provide positive support and guidance for the employee. Only protects the company at all costs!
*The term "thrown under the bus" I first heard used at this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Serious house cleaning from Manager level up to the top, especially Human Resources.

As a contract employee, was treated as an outsider by the internal staff and managers.

I worked at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The only reason you go to work- Salary

    Cons

Not a very welcoming team environment. Although there are signs all over that address issues of respect, confidentiality, trust, friendliness, etc. staff employees and managers don't seem to practice the stated behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

May need to focus on some team building training, as well as training on people skills. Manager should take accountability for on boarding new employees/ contractors instead of delegating responsibilities to lower staff employees, or expecting contractors to fend for themselves.

I have been working at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time

    Pros

    Decent pay structure
    Decent benefits
    Good Work Life balance

    Cons

Very mediocre management at the VP level and Director level. Does not take much to be a Director or VP. In any other organization, these folks won't be even 3rd tier managers. Some of the VPs and Directors in the Member and Provider space are inexperienced and immature and they have created a culture of threat and intimidation. As a result, recently, some of the best people have started to leave the company taking with them valuable institutional knowledge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a close look at those who left the company and those who were forced to leave due to unfair practices. The company will not be able to sustain for too long. Revert back to the old corporate philosophy. Get rid of your inexperienced VPs in the Member and Provider space under the TOS division - these folks are not Executive calibre and should never have been appointed to those posts - even some of the directors in TOS are inexperienced.
