I have been working at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

CEO is fiercely about service and digital movement and fully willing to rework healthcare for service. It is a crazy time for healthcare and lots of demand from the market to increase number of insureds and Burrell takes this mission seriously as the head of the largest Not for profit in the area.

    Cons

Very degree centric....no degree, limited options, regardless of delivery history. Tough breaking through old regime but if the data is on your side, magic can be worked.

    Pros

    Pay and making a difference.

    Cons

Management does not assist, everyone out for self. High school environment. Just horrible...and the way customers and providers are treated is horrible as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assist employees when needed. Strive for a more professional environment.

I have been working at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits for long term employees, central locations, and depending on who you report to opportunities for training

    Cons

More and more long term associates who still have a lot to contribute are feeling as if they're being pushed out in favor of younger MBAs - as if they don't even exist. Leadership has a back biting and punitive attitude. The average worker finds it difficult to get work done when leadership is fighting with one another. Especially in IT there is a mentality to grab credit and place blame on a daily basis contributing to stress and poor morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't ignore associates who have experience and still bring value to help transform this company and keep it going into the future. This company got to where it is today by people who didn't necessarily have an MBA and they are still the backbone of what happens daily (as evidenced by who the MBAs go to to get their work done). Make sure there is a healthy mix of new and seasoned. The All Associate Survey doesn't begin to tell the truth of what is actually happening.

I have been working at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time

    Pros

Good Benefits, lots of time off, no micromanaging

    Cons

They waste an enormous amount of money on projects that are never completed. I have been here for years and we are always told that a new system is coming, yet it never happens. Dont have the tools to do my job correctly because of this. Different departments work against each other instead of with each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the opinions of people who do the day to day operations before you decide to spend millions on a system that everyone down here knows isn't going to work.

    Pros

Great pay, endless opportunity for career advancement no matter what your specialty is! They are so understanding. The turn over rate isnt high, they hire as needed and let go as warrented.

    Cons

I'm contractual and working to become a carefirst associate :(

I worked at Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, reasonable commute, easily accessible to some okay(not great or outstanding) food places.

    Cons

Company Values - nothing good other than bottom line & to share holders. Bill Jews had a great vision, but that no longer exists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Total shakedown to rid the company of the sweat shop mentality, while all the deadwood goes out to 2 hour lunches & gets manicures & shops online while others break their backs! You REALLY need to look at HR!!!!

    Pros

    Work life friendly
    Easy if you're competent

    Cons

    Not challenging
    Not innovative and rewarding
Pay is not competitive, even to other blues plans

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Challenge leadership to challenge staff.

    Reward improvement and excellence.

Embrace change or continue to miss out on future opportunities.

Pay market rates or continue to only have ability to hire entry level or mediocre staff. Improve recruiting, offer relocation when appropriate, invest in top staff. Develop mentoring and "rising talent" programs.
