I have been working at Cargill as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

This company takes the time to personally grow its employees and offer a wide range of opportunities to fit every employee's interests.

    Cons

Being such a large company, it moves slowly and is very behind in the technology area and it takes a long time to get decisions made

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Work on retaining young talent!

Good place to start a career if you are young, not so much if you are in your 50's.

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Need better training. Need to treat everyone the same and not have favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management is give opportunities to your employees, don't ever tell them to their face that they are doing a crappy job. If they are doing a job that is not satisfactory find out why they and offer them more training if they need it.

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pays well, better work life balance day to day

    Cons

If you are an experienced hire be prepared to be treated like you don't know anything- by everyone! Cargill culture is very old fashioned, white male dominated and hierarchical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please start working on being inclusive. I am not talking about race or gender only, I am talking about being open to conversation and ideas.

    Pros

True to their values, culture for growth, being innovative, reward knowledge, and senior management is solid.

    Cons

Work-life balance and long hrs. Repeat Work-life balance and long hrs. Repeat Work-life balance and long hrs.

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good ethical company, volunteer opportunities, global experience

    Cons

IT is seen as overhead and the business units do not feel IT is responsive. As a result, all IT infrastructure is being eliminated and they will be using managed services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would have been nice to have had more opportunities for internal training to be considered for other internal opportunities.

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good work life balance. Very large company with many opportunities if you know the right people.

    Cons

Little to no investment into IT as the company states it is not their core competency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rely more on your staff to help guide your decisions, it appears that 5% of the knowledge base is making 99% of the decisions.

I worked at Cargill full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Any of the businesses that are not associated with Tartan are still great places to work. The entrepenurial spirit of growing businesse and working with customers are tough to find anywhere else. If in the right business, the potential for career growth is significant.

    Cons

Stay as far awary as possible from the Tartan initiative. The consultants brought in to implement SAP (primarily Accenture) have poisoned the culture to the point where it's unrecognizable from the Cargill that used to be a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Restore the culture that existed "pre-Tartan"
    * Don't expect IT outsourcing to yield long-term improvements. Others have tried it and it universally fails.
    * Promote people on merit versus diversity targets.
    * Purge the ranks of ineffective managers that are more worried about retaining their jobs than doing what's best for the company

I have been working at Cargill full-time

    Pros

Strong financially. Training opportunities were always available.

    Cons

They clearly lost courage and vision by outsourcing IT to TCS. Not the place to work if your contributions are in the IT field. They do not look to IT any longer as a means to create value or competitive advantage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to your employees and lead with courage. Instead of listening to consultants wanting only to profit from your ignorance.

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people, high integrity, supports career advancement, lots of room for growth, down to earth environment, great work life balance, global work experience

    Cons

resistant to change, old boy network, embarrassingly behind on latest technology, poor senior IT management, many managers have been promoted to the point of incompentency

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

changes need to start at the top, not middle management. As long as the top people stay the same, the problems will stay the same

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I've always been proud to say I work for Cargill, their values are solid, and their ethics are beyond reproach in my opinion. There have been ample opportunities to advance or learn new technologies.

    Cons

Training has always been weak, focused mostly on "on the job" training as opposed to certification, or formal trailing. Within the last 5 years there has been an increased focus on out-sourcing. My believe is that in the next 2-5 years most if not all traditional IT jobs will be outsourced, leaving only contract management roles.
