My experience with Cargill was a very worthwhile and learning experience.

    I worked at Cargill

    Pros

The best reason to work for Cargill is the amount of knowledge and experience you'll will gain in a short amount of time, as well as the quality of the skill base one will acquire.

    Cons

Some things that Cargill lacked was the ability of proper training, meaning people in new positions would ultimately have to train themselves and learn from their mistakes with upper management looking at the mistakes and not giving guidance of how to correct the problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice with upper management would be more cross training among different positions so that co-workers don't have to be so reliant on one person especially if that person isn't available.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Decent wages
    Union plant
    Work isn't very difficult
    Double time on Sundays
Triple time when scheduled to work on a holiday

    Cons

Go long stretches (2+ months) with no days off
    Safety is lacking
Management pushes production over employee safety
7 day work weeks and very rarely get holidays off

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to work the hours that the maintenance and production crew works to fully understand how hard the 7 day schedule is. Management gets weekends and holidays off while we are at work.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Global company operating in several countries. Several business units within the company offering a diverse range to work for: grain, oilseeds, flour, etc. Great ethical company that tries to always do the right thing. Accepting of people and their diversity. Company will be around for years to come.

    Cons

Company is in a state of flux for the next decade trying to decide what and how much to source to strategic suppliers. Ex. IT, finance, hr, etc. If you are not on the front line of a business unit, your long term outlook is not great. Lots of tiers in management trying to figure out how to lead people. The company is very large and has lots of processes and at such detail it may seem death by process. Because of this, it has lost the agility that smaller companies enjoy today.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire leadership from smaller companies to bring diversity and agility to the company. They don't need to have a resume of several hundred pages and come from ivy league schools, or come from fortune 50 companies.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

good benefits, higher end for holiday and vacation days, unlimited sick days, flexible about telecommuting and core work hours, 401k match with Cargill stock, private company so normally provides greater job security, global and diverse company, lots of internal jobs to apply for.

    Cons

If you are in the IT field, Cargill has starting outsourcing. Cargill also pays on the lower end for IT jobs. Cargill treats IT like an expense, never spending money to stay current. Upper Management seems to continually make poor decisions in the direction for global IT services, which eventually lead to the outsourcing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use IT to help grow your business. spend some money in IT. Outsourcing will fail every time because you will not have invested, engaged employees like you used to.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

exposure to large scale manufacturing, food safety, and quality control work in labs. Easy to get along with technicians that run the plant, the engineers aren't as sociable though. Solid experience in chemistry and food and beverage industry. Many jobs available in many business units. Resources to learn about other manufacturing plants in the facility.

    Cons

Eddyville, IA is in out in the country. Des Moines is the closest city (1 hour away). Not easy to get promoted unless you plan to live your life at work and stay here in the area. Job can get repetative. Pay raises do not really happen. No paid overtime. Shift schedule including nights.

I worked at Cargill as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Cargill is very professional in terms of management style and, as a private company, takes a long-term approach in assessing its business strategies and plans. People are very helpful and the culture fosters collaboration and teamwork. The international aspect of the company's operations is a plus.

    Cons

As with most large enterprises, decision-making can be slow. Also, as few employees leave, opportunities for advancement can be limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to share as much information as possible regarding the company's strategy and future direction with employees.

    Overall Okay

    I worked at Cargill

    Pros

Very employee safety oriented. Very high integrity on the product produced. Overall good working environment. Decent "open door" policy with supervisors/management at my site. Good benefits.

    Cons

The site I worked at produced hard cooked eggs. When business demands were slow, the number of hours worked dropped, so this was frustrating. Some policies were difficult to understand. Hard to break into any promotions within the company.
