I worked at Cargill (More than a year)

    Pros

Good retirement package if you can get to vesting. Tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Your experience will totally depend on the local management. Different work sections (QC vs Production vs Maintenance) often did not get along. The point system that was in place means potentially a high probability for getting fired.

    Pros

Starting pay was decent. Amount of vacation was above average. Some coworkers were educated. Was a relaxed environment to work.

    Cons

Most employees were not professional at all. Management was incompetent. There was promised room for growth that never materialized. Went through 4 different department managers in less than 2 years. Switched to 12 hour shifts with no actual holidays off.

    Advice to Management

Start to value employees. Don't force employees to work through holidays. Hire more compotent management. Employ work life balance tools.

I have been working at Cargill full-time

    Pros

High employee turnover creates opportunities for advancement not available elsewhere Large focus on career development

    Cons

High turnover can also be frustrating in that there's very little knowledge or experience left to maintain plant operations or complete projects Rural work locations are unfavorable to most people Lots of red tape. Very political.

    Advice to Management

The priority needs to be employee retention. Experienced employees probably spend 1/3 of their time training new employees that will leave in a year or two anyway. The setup is incredibly inefficient.
