I worked at Cargill full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Cargill has a lot of heart, including a company culture of warmth, belonging, spirit of service and ethics. You feel that you are part of a community that has embraced you. Within that circle of support you can have as much challenge and freedom to act as you want.

    Cons

Cargill's strengths are also its weaknesses at times. You are either "in" or "out", and the strong ties that make up the company culture also create a set of unwritten rules and an informal network of information that can be hard to decipher. You can have all the challenge you want, but make very sure you deliver exceptional results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember to walk the talk when it comes to appreciating and including a diverse set of personalities, thinking styles and skills.

    I worked at Cargill

    Pros

    Close-knit and professional team.
Great trainers (non-dedicated position - so they are taking time out of their day to help)
Opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of skills.

    Cons

Work is very regionally dependent for such a large company. If you want to work in the corporate side, you will likely have to be okay working in MN.

I have been working at Cargill full-time

    Pros

High level of trust and responsibility early on with plenty of chances to advance.

    Cons

Much more difficult to move up if you are not willing to relocate rather frequently.

I have been working at Cargill as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Lots of mobility
    Plenty of oppurtunity to grow

    Cons

summer is a false representation of the frozen desolate tundra know as minnesota

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I had great time met lots of smart and diverse individuals who were very frank and open with me. In fact I met no one who had a negative mantra or told me a broken way was a Cargill way...you know like you would hear at the Post Office for example. So I think perhaps working longer than the summer I could find something. but I had a great time.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Need better training. Need to treat everyone the same and not have favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management is give opportunities to your employees, don't ever tell them to their face that they are doing a crappy job. If they are doing a job that is not satisfactory find out why they and offer them more training if they need it.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of different opportunities, very ethical and supportive of the local communities. Pay is low to middle of industry for IT.

    Cons

Consensus decision making, little empowerment at the right levels, senior IT managers talk about valuing people but don't really connect with their people, too far removed from reality when they are making decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

(IT) Give your people the ability to move forward, they know what needs to be done but their hands are tied in many cases by bureaucracy and they are punished for going around barriers and not following 'process'.

I worked at Cargill full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Job security, huge balance sheet, private company able to focus on the long-term

    Cons

Far too many employees that would likely not cut it at other companies due to underperformance remain employed and in some cases in positions with significant responsibility, often stagnating earnings in business units particularly the energy platform which has lost many key senior traders in the past 2 years which had been large contributors to earnings over the past decade.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Be sure to be very pro healthy foods at the office. People take the company culture about feeding the world very seriously.

    Cons

Again the issue is they buy into the hype more than is warranted. We're going to run out of usable water a lot faster than we run out of usable food.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good work, but could be a bit more realistic about expectations for performance. Might be worth using peer and subordinate evaluation methods.
