Finally! I'm a barista!

Team Member (Current Employee)
Monona, WI

I have been working at Caribou Coffee part-time for more than a year

Pros- Community driven environment (customer and employee)
- Fast paced and lively
- Great treatment of employees (benefits and hours)
- Somewhat environmentally friendly (rain forest alliance certified)
- Great relations/opportunities to families/employees overseas (offering education, housing, food/water, and healthcare to those working in fields dealing with coffee)

ConsContinuously introducing new products/promos
Promo-driven sales
Tea selection is less than desirable (eight options, two decaf)
Little to no career growth
Coffee education is overshadowed by new bakery/promotions

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on coffee over introducing new bakery or specialty drinks. As much as customers love variety, they also love consistency and find comfort in knowing their drink is always available. Drink promos start early, which cause confusion to customers and end suddenly mid-season making sales plummet and hearts sink. Bean promo windows are short which cause team members/employees into sales-shock selling products they're not familiar with or passionate about only caring about recognition based on revenue.

Fun, great people to work with and great product

Training Store Manager (Former Employee)
DeKalb, IL

I worked at Caribou Coffee full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI loved the fact that I was valued as an employee and that my peers cared about me personally. I worked in a well organized group that helped each other out.

ConsI was sad to see that as a company they had to close down. I felt they offered that customer experience that customers look for. I really miss that!

Great company, iffy management

Shift Supervisor (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I worked at Caribou Coffee full-time for more than a year

Prosbecome a pro at really "knowing" coffee. There's more to coffee than just adding cream and sugar. Lots of opportunities to be individualized and create a specialty at work. The company promotes within mostly, its a great place to really gain customer service skills.

ConsWhen working with a manager that really enjoys you working in the position your in, it's hard to get them to sign off for your advancement up the ladder.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep your managers honest and unafraid to let their employees progress their Carribou career and treat your Districts better.

Overall I have loved working for Caribou, however, as it has become more corporate, it has become less enjoyable.

Supervisor (Current Employee)

I have been working at Caribou Coffee part-time for more than 8 years

ProsFlexible hours, positive work environment, creating relationships with coworkers and customers, nice that you actually get to interact with customers and get to know them.

Conspoor training, lower value on quality, becoming very corporate which allows less personal self expression or personality within each individual store, there are also issues with reviews being done in a timely manner and occasionally we do not receive back-pay when the reviews/raises were done significantly later than they should have been.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow for more personality within each store, improve training (really important!), make sure that quality performance and drink making is emphasized/recognized and not just quantity of sales.
