Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic full-time for more than a year
Pros – Laid back atmosphere. Management is tremendous at assigning work and not looking over your shoulder. Always have availability to learn new technologies
Cons – Nothing I can think of at this time
Advice to Senior Management – Keep the laid back atmosphere as well as the independence factor
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Large hospital with a variety of medical disciplines and Level 1 Trauma Center
Cons – Poor Health insurance. I had better insurance as a store clerk and it cost less. Takes an act of God to get your short term disability even though you have paid for it, FMLA is a joke even on Worker's Comp. Had to get the doctor to release me just so I could keep my job even though I shouldn't have been back. Worker's comp is terrible, had a shoulder injury was sent to a knee doctor who said nothing was wrong, 6 wks of therapy and permanent nerve damage then referred to a shoulder specialist who could not do anything other than decompress the site. Have to be in pain for the rest of my life now. Management does not listen to employees, short staff on units because of "special treatment" to certain employees with scheduling. Pay is not good, been there over 5 years, make the same a a new grad, even thought I have had a perfect evaluation each year, we are paid the lowest in the state of VA. No benefits worth speaking of. The rules change from day to day and you have no clue who is in charge, never see them. There is no support for staff,. Doctor's do not respect the nurses and do not communicate with the families.
Advice to Senior Management – Step back and take a good look at the company. Listen to your employees complaints. Pay the nurses a competitive wage, not the measly pay you have now. Need better benefits without the restriction of having to use only Carilion facilities.

Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic full-time
Pros – Good pay and you CAN learn a lot working with Carilion.
Cons – Very unprofessional atmosphere to be such a big organization. Not quite sure who is in charge and what the rules are from day to day. It without a doubt depends on who you know, and who you are friends with in this organization. No one really to turn to if there Really is a problem.
Advice to Senior Management – Pay closer attension to those around you that are getting the job done. The ones that are putting PT care first. Take employee complaints seriuosly.

Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – This place is on the border of being a great job. Like all places, management could use some management. Hard to get fired (this could be a bad thing). There are moments of down time and you can run errands while on the clock. They help pay for school. You can educate yourself in all levels of EMS and they will provide the means.
Cons – The companies benefits are crap. No matching 401k. Pension is minuscule and takes 5 years to become vested. Health insurance has gone way up and in monopolistic requiring you to only use their providers (should be illegal). No real kudos for when you go above and beyond. Don't hurt yourself or get sick, they will probably just fire you. And don't mention the word union.
Advice to Senior Management – Fire some people. And reward those who deserve it.

Pros – I genuinely would recommend Carilion to my friends (and have). Hired several weeks ago, I have been impressed by the professionalism of the company. As a Carilion employee, you really are part of a huge, successful team. Personally, my trainers and managers have been great as well - completely willing to work around my college class schedule.
Cons – The only thing that I can think that might be a slight drawback is pay. Though at the same time, I do not have a degree or license yet -- so I'm definitely not complaining. And the benefits are great.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic
Pros – There is many opportunities for growth, or lateral transfers. The educational benifits are excellent for those of use willing to take advantage of them.
Cons – Quite a bit of people have a sense of entitlement attitude. There are some employees who think they should advance, get promoted or receive raises just because they show up. The medical benefits are embarrassing considering we are in the health care business.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop trying so hard to retaine incompetent employees. Be more responsive to employees on a personal level instead of always throwing out the "company line," with fortune 500 catch phrases.

Current Employee – been working at Carilion Clinic
Pros – Employees a large portion of the greater Roanoke Valley.
Gives back to the community.
Non-profit organization that provides care to those that have no insurance.
Cons – Lack of communication for 90% of the employees creating duplication if effort and poor patient and employee care.
Extremely political.
Contradictory to mission.
Constant change in direction.
Employees do not feel valued or appreciated.
Advice to Senior Management – A long hard look needs to be taken of those that are making decisions on process improvements, explore if they have a clue what is needed from the patient perspective and front line staff.

Pros – Noble mission of patient-centered care. Employees (co-workers) are good people who care about each other. New CEO is communicating more to employees.
Cons – Too conservative in dealing with employee problems and bad employees at all levels.
Advice to Senior Management – Communicate vision regularly to employees. Also, don't treat every department the same. We are too big and diverse of an organization. Reward best employees, not just those who have been with Carilion the longest. Those are the ones who feel entitled and aren't as dedicated.
