I have been working at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good orientation, good education opportunities, teaching hospital, large trauma center for the area, lots of great experience and friendly coworkers

    Cons

Understaffing is a huge issue, mandatory overtime in some areas, inappropriate patient load

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries for nurses to improve retainment, high turnover creates understaffing which makes nursing loads dangerous and highly stressful

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Medical and Dental benefits seem to be on point. Ability to transfer to any department. Unlimited access to continuing education

    Cons

I haven't been working there very long but so far the base pay for a new graduate nurse is low but as a new graduate nurse, I am willing to take a low base pay in exchange for learning via a Magnet hospital

    Advice to Management

I don't have much advice as of yet. Management so far seem to be quite helpful when dealing with all the new graduate nurses.

    Pros

Always open Some friendly Co workers Nice uniforms to differentiate peoples different titles

    Cons

The management has become too friendly among themselves so they "have each others backs" management doesn't care about their team members and feel the need to Harass their team members as well.

I worked at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked for Carilion for 8 years after coming out of college. They are great at training new RNs and they have competitive salaries in the area.

    Cons

Advertised as self scheduling but at times you would be scheduled on days that you specifically asked for off.

Clinical excellence, management and HR problems...

    Pros

Overall vision, executive leadership (with a few recent past exceptions), stability plus growth over the years, commitment to clinical excellence, plus expansion of educational endeavors and clinical training. CRMH possesses a proud tradition of excellence in medical and nursing care overall, with pockets of consistent and outstanding clinical care.

    Cons

A sprawling middle to upper-middle management system with considerable redundancy. A middle management culture of bullying, harassment, blame and favoritism accepted and tolerated. Confidentiality a foreign and entirely misunderstood concept on the part of much of management and HR. Administration can at times value buzz words and concepts (such as an integrated EMR ~ Epic) above good old-fashioned vigilant care. Performance goals for management focused on production and through-put, and sometimes at odds with improvement in outcomes.

    Advice to Management

In the equation used in many places of employment, there are the managed employees, the managers and HR... with HR to act as a neutral and balancing party. This is not so at many departments in Carilion RMH. There is very little oversight, feedback and impact a managed employee can exert in this equation. This imbalance leads to lack of focus, and frankly can lead to dangerous situations. When there is accountability of both the managed and the managers, everyone performs better and teamwork naturally improves. This will take hard work, personnel change, as well as culture and accountability infrastructure changes. These concepts are not new to the HR and management paradigm; as CRMH is advanced in many clinical and technical therapy offerings, the management culture is not nearly as advanced. Size of the facility is both a blessing and a curse. Good luck; there are many very excellent and worthy practitioners there and many patents in the catchment area in need.

    Pros

Great room for advancement. Love my coworkers. Lots of educational opportunities through this company. Good place to start and a lot of interesting departments to work for.

    Cons

The pay is subpar. Scheduling is erratic. If you want to gain next level RN you have to do all the work (CAP) on your own time. Expensive health insurance.

    Pros

My salary and benefits were good.

    Cons

HR dept is fine unless or until you have a problem; not enough staff in case mgmnt/social work dept. Workload is two FT jobs in one. Some petty coworkers, lots of favoritism. Management is out of touch w/what workers do & do not care about this dept's high turnover. Mgmnt writes up workers all the time for being too slow or find other things to write ppl up for. It stays on your employee record there & makes it impossible to transfer to another dept.

    Advice to Management

Retire and HR needs to change up as well and bring new, different leaders aboard.

I worked at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's fast paced and busy. You're never without something to do. There are plenty of opportunities for overtime and they are flexible with days off, schedule changes, and sick leave. In addition the training for your job is very good and you'll seldom be left wondering what to do as most staff members are knowledgeable and friendly with helping new team members. Overall an atmosphere of teamwork. Management will listen if you have an issue and for the most part try hard to solve problems that don't conflict with department policy.

    Cons

The ability for promotion within the department is nearly nonexistent and schedules are seldom consistent due to high turnover. The job itself is very very stressful and people burnout fast. Due to this team members quit frequently and the staffing needs fluctuate. You can expect to work holidays due the facility being a full service hospital. In addition pay is not competitive with less stressful positions of similar skill level offered at different organizations. Management is prone to wasting their budget on equipment that doesn't work and wasting time enforcing policy which has nothing to do with making the department more efficient. They also grade you every month on your performance using a lot of arbitrary statistics which can be easily gamed once you know how they're measured.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees better. The bottom line is that turnover is killing the department at all levels. You can't expect employees to complete more and more tasks and penalize them for failing but not reward them for succeeding. In addition you can't move goal posts and assume employees wont notice. It's pretty simple: treat employees ethically and reward them appropriately. Resources are wasted on solving problems that don't exist.

    coworkers, scheduling, benefits, patients, location

    Cons

Noone listens to you, squeky wheel gets demoted and some are even terminated.

    Advice to Management

Watch how you make up untruths regarding staff to get them corrective actions, pay close attention to the documentary that will be shown on National television with many of your staff that underwent voice recognition and facial recognition changes to be able to come forward without retaliation.
