I have been working at Carl Zeiss

    Pros

Decent pay for mid to upper management. Work / Life Balance is good

    Cons

Chaotic. Difficult culture for non-Germans. Poor communication from Germany, and zero collaboration among US businesses. Everyone is on their own re: learning best practices. Very resistant to adding headcount, which leads to burn-out for survivors. Not enough people or robust systems to implement ever-increasing demands of bureaucracy in Oberkochen

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a culture of information sharing and cooperation. Take an honest look at employee morale and its root causes.

I worked at Carl Zeiss full-time

    Pros

Training, Travel, Pay, Co-Workers, Advanced Technology, industry leader. Zeiss is very forward thinking and cutting edge in all it's divisions.

    Cons

Travel can be a Con if you are uncomfortable with the regularity. Slight disconnect between Field and home office for many administrative tasks but this may have been corrected since.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

continue your support of Field Service, they are your front line, KUDOS

I have been working at Carl Zeiss as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Great team spirit, all hands on deck and good location in the San Francisco East Bay

    Cons

Update processes, and recruit management that empower their employees rather than micro manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make customer satisfaction the number one priority.

I worked at Carl Zeiss full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great training... top of the mind product in the eyes of the scientist (your primary customer). Made between $100 - 150K per year. Flexible schedule, but you need to be a self starter and put in the hours to become successful.

    Cons

Same as any company.... you deal with it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is great. I enjoyed everyone I worked with and had great relationships with all my managers.

I have been working at Carl Zeiss full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company typically has positive growth which allows for some sense of employment security.

    Cons

Top heavy in management positions and difficult for engineers to develop inot managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look within the ranks of engineering to improve growth in new markets. They are the ones with the creative talents and the eye for change.

    I worked at Carl Zeiss

    Pros

You can make a great income at Carl Zeiss once you learn the equipment and get a reputation in your area.

    Cons

They change their commission compensation plan every year.... and you spend half the year trying to figure it out, and half the year pushing products that you normally wouldn't sell to a client so you can maximize your personal compensation in terms of commission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management was very good for the most part. My first manager had been in the industry for 20+ years and was always fair and equitable with me. Gave me lots of opportunity, and seemed to be sensitive to personal matters that arose during my tenure at Zeiss.
