Overall positive experience even if the pay was a bit subpar

Consultant (Current Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Carleton University part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible schedule, on campus site so easy to get to classes from there, recommend it for students who have long gaps between classes and will be on campus anyways, payments were always on time

ConsThe pay was a bit subpar, a certain lack of professionalism by coworkers and supervisors, have to deal with disrespectful and entitled students

Family-friendly, good work-life balance and benefits, great undergraduate intake

Assistant Professor (Current Employee)

I have been working at Carleton University full-time

ProsGreat benefits and recognition of work-life balance.

ConsMaking changes to curriculum offerings as allied to faculty or shifting department interests occur at a glacial pace. Ottawa is expensive to live in as a single earner and stifling in terms of social life.

Valuable work experience

Residence Fellow/Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I worked at Carleton University part-time for more than a year

Pros- Youthful work environment
- Looks good on the resume
- Work you can feel good about doing because it's contributing to the education experience of others

Cons- When working as a TA supporting courses taught by contract instructors I was often frustrated because they were thrown into their position with little preparation and there was a lot of confusion
- When working as a residence fellow I often felt annoyed with the unnecessarily strict and subjectively evaluated programming expectations that didn't jive with the reality of the wants or needs of the students
- Sometimes the approach of the institution toward students, staff and faculty felt a little too profit-driven for a place of learning -- I felt the quality of the educational experience being provided by the school was sometimes compromised by the amount of students the school wanted to admit into its programs and residence buildings without the proper space, staff or resources to accommodate increased numbers (e.g. new residence buildings were built without new senior residents or onsite counselors being hired or cafeteria space being added)

Advice to Senior Management- Please train and pay your contract instructors more so TAs feel less overwhelmed and more supported

Carleton is highly under-rated!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Carleton University

ProsWorld-leading research, friendly and tight-knit faculty, scenic campus, highly competent and helpful admin and HR staff. Science (including computer science and math) and Engineering faculties, with which I had direct contact, are very strong

ConsReliance on government funding and grants can create financial uncertainties and headaches, and entails dealing with bureaucracy on a regular basis

Advice to Senior ManagementStronger advertising and PR campaigns would help improve Carleton's name recognition. Carleton should be a household name as one of the strongest universities in Canada, but currently is not!

Good

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Carleton University

ProsThe main focus is that it is pretty much a research based project that I am working on and I am improving day by day.

ConsBasically, the downsides are not that much at carleton university. Sometimes, the lab is crowded and people are chatting so it is hard to focus.

Good overall experience

Teach Assistant (Systems Engineering) (Former Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I worked at Carleton University

ProsLots of variety in courses taught.
State of the art equipment.
Lots of smart people to discuss ideas with.
Eagerness to improve.

ConsFar from downtown.
The ME building is old and needs upgrades.
The transit system doesn't operate very well. Buses are always over capacity.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should improve the public transit system so that it is easier to get to and from campus. Also, it would be nice if campus had designated bike lanes.

a great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Carleton University

Prosmanager gets resources needed, then stays out of the way so that professionals can get the job done right. No micromanaging!

Consnot in the top league as far as research universities go, so not much depth in terms of on-site collaboration, but so what- research is now global via the Internet, so this is no longer much of a hindrance

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work, know when to step in to get resources for your people, and when to step out so they can get the job done.

Great place to work... you can work as hard and go as far as you want to

Administrative Management (Current Employee)

I have been working at Carleton University

ProsGreat work life balance. Strong sense of community and pride in staff for working here. Dedication to service students is improving. Strong performers can perform. New leadership is working out well.

ConsSlow decision making... typical red tape... it is a public sector company / mentality after all. Like other university environments, tensions between staff and faculty members. More respect needed from faculty to staff / corporate. Some imbalances between merit and pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementLEAP - Listen, empathize, agree and partner! Listen to feedback and have more of a private sector mentality.
