I have been working at Carlton-Bates full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great set schedule. Monday thru Friday 8-5. Co-workers are great to work with. Big clients means big commision.

    Cons

Base pay is low. Client list based on seniority. Was told by upper management that 5yrs must go by before I can think about moving up in title.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more one on one with each employee. Personally, was not trained on the system and learned along as worked. Took me a year to understand how things run.

    I worked at Carlton-Bates full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you're one of the chosen few, you can practically get away with murder, and your job is secure.

    Cons

Don't expect to get ahead if you aren't close personal friends with the managers. Extreme favoritism and nepotism all over the place. Those who cut corners get ahead, and those who try to do an honest job get steamrolled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the value of your loyal employees who put up with your endless changes and requirements.

Hire more qualified people and pay them more. But give them more responsibility and let them make decisions with the customers in mind.

I have been working at Carlton-Bates

    Pros

Great place to work if you don't want to grow/develop in anything other than Sales/Distribution
Solid positioned for growth. Margins running in the 20 - 25% range and net coming in in the 15-18% range the company will be around for a long time.

    Cons

If you are not a Sales person then your career path is a true DEAD END. Career advancement is not about the blood, sweat, and tears you put in but who you know. The good ole boy network is alive and well; if you are not based at corporate (Little) then you are just a number.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate changes; when people are reassigned or let go or leave the only way someone figures it out is via a bounced email. Historically a CBC all email blast would go out notifying people of the changes. That was over kill and the fact that it was eliminated is a positive but the Managers are not communicating the changes to the troops on the ground.

Field talent under-valued, under-utilized. A solid company of the past, but future wobbly.

    I worked at Carlton-Bates full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

An opportunity to learn the OEM-side of the business, and work with leading suppliers of the industry. Interesting, growing business of value-add brings new insights and opportunities for expansion. Incorporation of WESCO businesses opens new horizons.

    Cons

Exhausting internal friction and dictatorial leadership. Lack of field talent management, broken down internal communication and rampant cronyism stifles CB. Major gaps in collaboration, sharing and management through 'One WESCO'.
